I've just had a rather vague request from my school asking me for a Certificate of Residence so that (apparently) I can claim my tax back. I looked into this before I came out here in 2007 and was under the impression that no such scheme exists between the UK and Korea.
I'm flying off on holiday for 16-days on Saturday and don't really want to spend the next couple of days fannying about trying to find out how to get this certificate, although I think I'm right in thinking that I'd need to contact my tax office back in the UK and apply for one through them. If anyone has had a similar request from their school or, if anyone has any other info that may be useful in bringing me up to speed on this, it'd be much appreciated.
Cheers. |

It seems if you avoid paying tax in Korea then you are liable to pay it in the UK. The UK has a higher tax rate so I just pay Korean tax. |
I wish I had known this 6 months ago. I gave my school a copy of my P45 when they requested a Residence certificate, I have no idea whether they used it or not. I'm hoping that when/if I return I will be able to slip through the net. It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has actually done that. |
