Wow this year 6 abortions, up from 3 last year. 1 was quite well known the other 4 only told me because they could not talk to their parents and the last one I'm pretty sure that loose girls don't gain that much weight for no reason and then suddenly loose it in a matter of weeks + crying everyday. Oh and one girl had to leave for a week to get her appendix out. Why did I let her skip class 9 months earlier.

In a school of 600 these pretty much on par with my American high school of 2000.

It kind of sucks that they are in a total no win situation. They can't tell their parents, their boyfriend, or anyone for fear of massive retribution. So even K-teachers are the last on the list. Its like find a big sister who will drive them to the doctor and somehoe scrounge up a couple of hundred bucks for the deed.

If it's happening that often at my school (~550 middle & high school girls) I'm completely out of the loop. We do get the odd one disappear every now and again for reasons I don't know.

I guess I might have had several abortions already if I grew up in Korea...

I was a bad kid...........( I mean, all kids are BAD, if you are talking about the opposite side of desciplined or psychologically mature)

But fortunately I was growing in a place the TV in the midnight was not as exciting as here, a place DVD bang and love Motel were unheard, a place kids didnt have to Hagwon thus made no excuse being home late...

Koreans really have to teach their kids about birth control...

I guess the parents don't have a clue what their kids are up to - when they tell their parents they are going to the JimJilBang/Sauna to meet a couple of friends and sleep there - but actually take off to a party...

the sad thing is many of these girls were probably "forced" to have sex by their drunk boyfriends at some "High school party"..

now they have to live the rest of their life being labelled as a DIRTY girl - by the other students, and whoever knows about the abortion (everyone - as their is no privacy in Korea)

I'm not passing judgement on the girls, but I do feel sorry for them. They must be under a lot of stress given they can't tell anyone except for a teacher. Of course if a teacher tried to do that in the west, they'd be put in jail for parental interference.

To the OP, how young were these girls? Are they back at school? How are they adjusting?

Teen Pregnancies
JoongAng Daily (September 5, 2008)
http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2894528
Quote:
According to the Korea National Statistical Office, 2.3 out of every 1,000 girls aged between 15 and 19 gave birth last year. Official statistics show that every year, we have nearly 3,500 teenage single mothers.

Only 20 to 30 percent of teenage pregnancies are carried to term. The rest have abortions. This shows the seriousness of teen sex problems.

We should increase education on pregnancy prevention in schools and to families, for both boys and girls. A social network for single teenage moms should be set up.

According to a survey by the National Human Rights Commission conducted late last year, 71.4 percent of pregnant teenage girls under the age of 19 dropped out of school because of pregnancy. Most of the girls wanted to continue their education but the schools persuaded them to quit....

Youth Experiencing Sexual Contact Earlier
By Park Si-soo, Korea Times (October 2, 2008)
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/10/117_32056.html
Quote:
The Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs conducted a survey on 13,721 secondary school students in 2007 to ascertain the first time they kissed, had physically contact or sexual intercourse.

According to the data released by Rep. Kim Choon-jin of the Democratic Party on Thursday, 58 percent or 8,013 of the respondents said they had experienced "sexual relations" encompassing sex, kissing, and other forms of physical contact.

Of those students who said yes to having had some form of sexual contact, those that had experienced "sexual relations," meaning kissing or touching, before 11 years old rose to 11.6 percent in 2007 from 4 percent the previous year. Those between the ages of 12 and 14 stood at 19.4 percent, a two-fold increase from 2006.

Of the "experienced" students, 548 responded that they had full blown sexual intercourse. It showed 19 percent of them had sex when they were second graders in junior high school aged at 16. About 17.4 percent said they had their first sex by the age of 17....

The survey found that the "video room" -- where one can watch a movie in a tiny closed room -- is the most sought-after spot among students for sex, followed by Korean-style karaoke....

4 in 10 Collegians Say Sex Possible Without Love
By Bae Ji-sook, Korea Times (September 23, 2008)
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/09/117_31528.html
Quote:
According to Ewha Womans University Prof. Shin Kyung-lim's survey on 6,000 university students, in which 63 percent were male and 37 percent female, 50.3 percent of men and 17.6 percent of women said they have had sexual experiences.

Females apparently became more sexually active after having had their first experience. Of those female students with sex experiences, about 30 percent said they have sex every week and 13 percent more than three times a week. Some 1.2 percent said they had sex every day. Of males, 22 percent said they have sex every week and 7.6 percent three times a week....

In Search of Virtue and Virginity
By Hannah Bae, Lee Ho-jeong, and Lee Eun-joo; JoongAng Daily (October 3, 2007)
http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2881029
Quote:
According to a 1996 study by Youn Gahyun, a researcher at Chonnam National University in Gwangju, Confucianism places a high value on sexual innocence until marriage.
Additionally, as Christianity has eclipsed Confucianism in Korea, especially evangelical versions, the idea of chastity before marriage has become more pervasive.
Instead of talking about sex, Korean parents prefer to rely on tacit disapproval of sex instead.
"I remember my mom coming to me when I was about 14 or 15 and alluding to sex and asking if I knew anything about it," said Kim, 22. "I said, in a very exasperated voice, Umma [the Korean word for mother], I took FLE [Family Life Education] in fifth grade. Her reaction was something along the lines of: 'Thank God I dont have to explain it.'"
Despite their parents conservative outlook, some young adults do consider pre-marital sex to be normal behavior, and some partake, albeit furtively.
"I live with my grandmother so I have never taken a girl home," said Chae Dong-yoon, 23. "I have gone to DVD rooms as well as 'love motels.' Mostly love motels though, thats the most convenient place. I think this goes for the majority of Koreans who live with their parents."...

Restrict Abortions More Carefully
Kim So-yoon, JoongAng Daily (March 4, 2008)
http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2886900
Quote:
Research conducted three years ago reported that there is a yearly average of 340,000 abortions in Korea.
On the other hand, in 2006, about 470,000 infants were born in the country. That means that the babies killed by abortion represent about 72 percent of the newborn babies....

According to a report released by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, of the estimated 340,000 yearly abortions, married women sought abortion in about 204,000 cases while single women received the other 136,000.
Of the married women, about 70 percent decided to abort their unborn babies because they didnt want to have more children. Another 17.5 percent of the total chose to get an abortion because they can't afford to raise newborns. In the case of the single women, 93.7 percent underwent an illegal abortion because they were minors....

Damn! Must have been an exciting field trip.

Female student: 'Teachuh, I need bathroom!

Teacher: 'Okay, be quick.'

Quick-thinking male student: 'Teachuh!!! I am sweaty and must go bathroom!!!'

Teaher: 'Okay, be quick! You have 3 minutes!!!

Male student: 'I just need 1 minute!'

Micro for the win!

I would like to know how the OP knows exactly how many abortions there are in a school of 600 students...and he/she keeps track of this information on a year-by-year basis???

I know back home there are ALOT more teen-age abortions than people know about, and in this culture where people cover up shameful events on a far greater scale, it seems strange that a teacher (a foreign teacher no less) would be in the loop on this.

I really have a hard time understand how these girls can get knocked up when they spend so much time going to schools all day!

1. there is almost no other person to talk about this that won't judge them, even best friends or parents. They need a 20ish "cool" aunt or big sister. I don't think anyone else understands. I bet they would get beaten if they told their Kteacher male or female.
2. money
3. I'm the youngest and by default the most popular teacher

how are they after

And they are sad for a few weeks, then back to normal, like nothing happened. Dating and what not. Even the same guy yeesh.

They don't ever talk about it again.

Quote:
how they have time?

after exams, they have an evening with no school/study time.

weekends

doctor's appointment or some other excuse, change clothes, parents are at work

skip hagwon, motel

Dinner time, nearby apartment

They should be in school after 5, but I see them with their date clothes and if they are guilty they run like hell.

Those notorious field trips.
