I have been in Korea for a while now, some would may even call me a lifer. Korea has treated me very well. Have had some great teaching jobs, made some amazing friends, been to great places.

Everytime I look online, the leading story tends to be the economy. I look at my country and see continuous layoff after layoff. Unemployment is rising fast.

So with that in mind, do you think those at home with degrees and no work will make their way here? I know I would. If I were in a situation where I could rent out my house, grab my better half and avoid the downturn at home for a couple of years, I would be all over this place like a fat kid on a candy!

Have any of your friends from home been inquiring about Korea? The other day I got an email from a friend who would like me to help her friend find work...I got a feeling this could be the beginning.

Thoughts?

Well...yea I'm guessing that you'll see more ESL Teachers coming over to Korea, a lot more! I'm one of them. After getting laid off 2 months ago working in field/event marketing and actively searching for another job, I have finally given up and am returning to the ESL teaching profession. MANY of my friends and acquaintances have graduated a year or more ago and still can't find work. Personally, I've even gone as far as applying to all of the fast food restaurants in my area and even they aren't hiring! That's not to say that I'd rather work the drive thru window at McDonalds than teach ESL abroad, but that just goes to show how dismal the economy is here in The U.S.

Even though things look pretty bleak, there are a few industries that are growing in 2009, health care and education are the top two. Plus, with Obama's commitment to provide more funding for public education and his goal to increase teacher's salaries, it may be a good time to start working on earning teaching credentials or a MA in Education...
