Ilsan's a joke.
one of their favorite things to do is play the curriculum game - but no matter what the student's level is, or if you need extra time because, gasp! they don't understand everything immediately, you have to follow the page order given.
and guess where that's determined?? from other higher-level students in the main campus - mokdong maybe?
poly is the epitomy of a sweatshop for esl teachers -
ah ! I just remembered - I had one class of first grade elem students - this little girl developed a bad chest cold and couldn't stop coughing; she was already clearly underweight - probably from being shipped around to hakwons all day! she coughed and coughed and it literally was interrupting the class! I was so worried about her and then - she coughed so hard and long - her face turned red, and then I thought she was going to pass out - she could hardly breathe!
I absolutely insisted they call her mother - the secy was furious - and when my manager found out - HE was furious - I said, she's too sick to be in school - the next day she was back again, still coughing up a storm - I insisted they call her mom again and told her to lay down on the couch out front - everyone was FURIOUS with me! the little girl told them she didn't want to miss E class and wanted to stay - and my manager was like "See?!" - oh yeah - like a 7 yr old knows what's best for them!!
scumbags, absolutely scumbags! I held my ground - I made her lay on the couch until she got better.
will never forget that one - 
our manager was just -you know we are a business and we have to promote our school and do what's best for our clients and I'm like - I am - she's a kid and I don't want her to get pneumonia you jack ass !!  |

| wow I will be in Korea of January and was actually considering poly but after reading this I feel a bit uneasy..expecially because some of these posts are a bit old. what to do!?! |

I know some have, but did you have to work 37 classes. And does it matter so much if it's a positive experience if they are cheating you on severance by playing with the numbers? I would advise teachers to go to places that give you less hours, give you a severance of at least 2.1 million, not 1.6 million and don't give you over 30 classes a week. If you are going to work like that, stay home. A friend of mine was working 37 classes at Poly, no joke. I was shocked. Anyone doing over 30 classes is working too much at a hagwon.
Also, Mr. Kim claims his teachers are certified. A friend who worked there was not certified at all. He got out of Poly as soon as he could.
The other guy we knew who worked there wasn't certified, either.
Poly also says if they aren't certified, then they are linguists. Je ne crois pas que ca c'est vrai. Ce n'est pas vrai de tout. C'est faux. C'est totalement faux mas c'est normale dans ce pays de lire des choses fausses comme ca malheureusement. Malheureux, en generale, pour ceux qui travaillent pour des ecoles privees comme Poly.
Have one of the linguists translate that.... |
If you are going to be a smarta$$ and use another language to make a point, it would probably be wise to spell all the words correctly to help solidify the effectiveness. |

Do some careful research on the SPECIFIC branch or franchise you are interested in working for, and be sure to speak to teachers who are CURRENTLY working there. Don't base a decision off of generalizations you read at Dave's. There are some excellent POLY campuses, and there are some which seem less than desirable. Do your homework, and you could end up with a solid and rewarding job. |

Also be sure to ask about Poly's rip-off policy concerning severance pay at the end of the contract. Poly school gives teachers a monthly salary made up of "base pay" plus "bonus pay". They then pay only the "base pay" as severance, thus saving themselves several hundred thousand won per teacher every year. Would you really like to work for a "school" that treats teachers like this? |

| The campus I am looking into is SeoDaeMun Campus. I have read alot about poly but have yet to find any info. on this specific campus. They have already sent me the contract and have already spoken to one of the current teachers. It does seem like a work load-9am to 7:30om MWF and 9am to 6:40 TR but they are also paying me 2.8 won which is pretty good. I do not mind working that much as long as it rewarding at the end of the day. This is a big decision I have to make but due to the mixed reviews I am so unsure. Does anyone know any info. they can give me on the SeoDaeMun campus? Also they told me that I will only have two days of training prior to starting- is that enough? Is there anything I should go over before I go? They also do not offer sick days-? Does anyone know if the housing they offer is nice, I am going to be in hongdae which I hear is a lively area. Any inforomatin is deeply appreciated! Thanks to all! |

Wow, that sounds like a really good deal. Work 10 to 11 hours a day for 2.8 About as good as Pagoda and YBM with their really enticing offers. Weally, weally enticing. Even if 2.8 was plus housing it sucks donkey nuts. They probably expect you to do stupid paperwork and have their noses up yer butt constantly.

I'm getting set to leave a Poly now and can't wait to get out. The long hours are just ridiculous. As others have said, the micro-managing, pointless meetings and more than usual B.S. is just too much. It also doesn't help that my particular location has a foreign teacher in a slight power position who powertrips anytime they feel like it.
I would seriously advise staying away from Poly unless you have absolutely no life and don't mind tons of endless shenanigans from the management.
I'm sure others may have found it to be a good experience and I'm sure that not all of them are bad, but... |

Over 50 hours a week, no overtime, as many as 10 classes a day. They decide your vacation. Yeah, please come. I'lll even train you!!!!!!! RUN FOREST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your interest in our schools. I'll be honest with you. Working at Poly isn't for anyone. If your goal is to just come to Korea and have fun then I would not recommend Poly. However, we have some of the brightest students in all of Korea. For someone pursuing a career in this industry, it will be a valuable experience teaching at Poly because you can focus on teaching and not 'babysit' like most other smaller places. As a teacher, it'll be a very refreshing experience. At the same time though, because our standards are higher, you will feel pressured occasionlly but this is inevitable wherever you work. All in all though, if you have the right goals and mentality, it will be a very rewarding time.
As for the sick days, we use to have it on the contract but got rid of it because it was being used inappropriately.

| I work for Poly, at least for the moment. We just received a new contract to sign which includes longer hours on top of an schedule that already requires 10 classes a day! That is 40 classes per month in a workplace that has been accurately described in the prior listings from my personal experience. My previous work experience included more than 7 years in fortune 50 companies in America so perhaps my expectations were a bit too high when I arrived. But I know I am a fool to stay for less than $2,000/month compensation with the current exchange rates and nearly 200 hours per month! |
