On this website www.koreanconsulate.qc.ca it states "First time applicants must apply for visas at the Korean Embassy or Consulate in their own countries."

I called the consulate in Montreal and asked them if this mean I can still do the visa run to Japan since I have had an E2 before. Their answer was not 100% clear but it seemed like they were saying yes. They said something about waiting for the visa issuance number first and then they can tell me if I need to get it here or if I can get it in Japan. I had called twice already and they seemed annoyed with me so I didn't press for more information.

Has anyone actually done this? I think most of us are now under the impression that we HAVE TO get our visas in Canada for the rest of our lives but it seems this may not be the case after all.

I didn't get my visa in Japan, but I did get a new Korean visa in the USA last month. It wasn't my first visa. I'm also Canadian.

Once you have an issuance number you can get your visa in Japan. However, if you have any black marks on your previous visa you will have to be interviewed in Canada. That is why they are suggesting that you get your issuance number first.

It is not the case. I got my first E-2 in Bangkok in August. Of course, my degree had to be verified by KCUE. Nonetheless, if you don't have any black mark on your immigration file, you should be able to go to Japan.

Thanks for the info. My employer called last night (at 3am!) and told me she spoke to immigration about this. I will be able to get my visa in Japan since I had an E2 before.
