A brilliant ploy by the gas, heat, and air conditioning companies to get people to ALWAYS leave the windows open, thus making more demand for their products.
It's like talking to a wall to try and explain the impossibility of fan death. |

I think someone's jacking with you.
I got:
"I guess if you don't sleep with covers on and you sweat a lot at night, it might be uncomfortable." (Co-teacher)
"Fan death? Yeah, that comes around every summer, it's fun to talk about." (Co-teacher)
"Death? From a fan?? I think you are using it wrong." (My boss, he's an engineer)
"How do you say it.. old woman? Old wife story? [Old Wives Tale] Oh yes, ha ha...that ...Old wives tale.. is very famous in Korea!!" (My friend) |

Probably not. There are plenty who believe the wives tale and repeat it as fact. And fan death is just one example of the nonsense repeated ad-nauseam.
Count yourself lucky to have such astute co-teachers who are able to see though the myth. |

Fan Death is a summer topic here on Dave's, along with how Koreans leave windows/doors open with the air con on. Winter topics are about taking showers and using the facilities in unheated bathrooms and riding on hot buses.
Please keep topics to the proper season. |

Even as last as last summer, Korean media outlets do cite fan death as a cause of death.
Whether they really believe it or not, it does save face for the family. They don't have to say "Mr. Kim died of dehydration and alcohol poisoning after a long night of drinking and cheating on his wife with dabang girls." |

Yeah, no talking about Fan Death until at the earliest April. |

I'm more surprised lately to see so many Koreans believing in the existence of aliens. But I guess that's a whole another can of worms... |

Yeah. One of my co-teachers insisted that this was true.
Nevermind that I told her it was scientifically impossible.
"No! But I know someone!"
Christ. |

Wow, you must work with some of the most enlightened people in Korea. Out of interest, I have asked quite a few Koreans, and they almost universally think that fan death is true. So I ask, "why is Korea the only country in the world that seems to have fan death?" Some have replied, "we must be more supceptible to it since we are Korean." Wow. |

My boss is quite particular about who he hires.
When I mentioned it last summer, they actually started talking about how people could be killed with fans in an enclosed room. One started with the motor burning out and causing a fire. One of them insisted it was plausible that if you sweat buckets at night and the fan is blowing right on you, it could drop your body temperature and make your "uhhh... can't fight infection... [immune system?] ...hold on... <dictionary> YES! Immune system would not work, and if you're already sick...you might die... But it would take many days."
Boss started just taking the piss... "I think you are using it wrong. You should not take the cover off the fan. You should not take the cover off, and then put the fan in your face or put it where it can fall on you." |
