Aside from the clown routine, he's not doing much (and possibly screwing up) the English of his audience. The methods don't work, right? From what I've seen, his shows are almost all translation and explanation in Korean. Getting 'um started early on how NOT to learn, he is.
Nice guy or not, he's being paid a ton to be a terrible teacher. Shame on him ( all the way to the bank), and shame on Korean educational TV folks in general.

I hear the dude's Korean is great, though.

Not only that, but he puts his face and name on a bunch of childrens English texts. I checked out one of his phonics books. It was teaching the phonetic sounds through Hangul. Atrocious. If he is a real teacher he should know this is very very wrong. Many Korean teachers do this and it just assures that Korean kids will never have proper English pronunciation.
Either he completely sucks as a teacher or he just blindly puts his name on these books. What a *beep*.

Another thing I've always wondered about Durst - how does he act around his Korean family? At Chuseok does he pour drinks for his older Korean relatives or do they send him off to another room to entertain the children? Does he bow or jump in like Krusty the Clown?

At any rate, he's getting old enough that he should soon enough find himself the victim of Korean ageism (and some 20-something soul-seller will no doubt come along to replace him).

Wow I am really suprised by the jealousy of some of you with regards to this topic. He is doing what Korea is asking of him. I think in all my time there has been only one guy on EBS that would just explain things in English. If you watch it they all seem to speak Korean on there too much. Even if there are Koreans around them they still speak Korean, which I don't get. He makes a lot of money and has a nice house so good on him. You got to do what the producers want. I wonder if any of you get the chance to get on TV how you are going to entertain the audience? Juggle? dance? What have you got to offer? Let us all sit there and read the news?

unbelievable

Have you seen englishee guppy, oh I mean cafe, on EBS in the mornings?

This show is for adults yes, not kids, because all of the people on the show are adults. Durst is on the show, yes?

This is the best way I have found to explain the adjective "cheesy" to my students

Sure, he does what his producers ask of him, and that is completely fine. I really don't sense people being jealous of him and his accomplishments moreso than I think people are embarassed by him and with people having expectations of foreign teachers behaving and conducting classes in the same manner.

This is a hilarious thread!!!

What do you guys expect for a TV show meant for 5 year-olds?

William F. Buckley?

I agree. I don't know what shows he appears on but from what I've seen, it seems like they are targeted towards children... and let's not forget, it's television. The show is as much about entertainment as it is about education if not more so.

yup.. how is being a grinning monkey on tv different to being a grinning monkey in a hakwon? the difference for that guy is that he probably makes loads of money, which is enough to explain why people hate him.
good luck to the guy.. he seems to have found his niche in life and i should imagine he enjoys the financial rewards if nothing else.

Thanks for all the fun responses~ Laughing Cool Wink

I must admit, when I started to write this thread, I used a much more callous wording to describe him (replace "Koreanized" with "idiotic/clown/etc") but then I read a little more, and started to respect him somewhat. First thing I read was that he came to Korea because his Korean stepmother speaks no English and he wanted to talk with her....

But after that I saw he taught English all over- in uni even. Now his face is friggin everywhere

To GwangjuParents & victorology,
I don't believe you have to act like a fool to educate & entertain children. Case in point: Sesame Street. The adults were adults but friendly. Puppets were made to laugh at and kids even learned more from them. In Japan, or on Spanish channels, adults usually aren't singled out like Isaac to behave foolishly. It seems when he is with Koreans they act normally, but he is at the child's level (maybe he does eat at the kids' table!)

Whistleblower's avatar signifies why I think he is disappointing. His company isn't properly resourced to edit out simple spelling errors. I have seen others (foreign men) whine like Korean pre-teens, but they haven't achieved the stardom-status as this guy, Isaac. Doesn't he have clout to fix things and make positive changes??

Bass, I would love to listen to a podcast on him. I'm really curious!
Maybe I'll stop cringing when he tells his story... Confused Wink Cool

Does he still host that quiz show for kids on Arirang? What's it called? Not Contenders, the other one.

If so, look at the wardrobe he allows himself to be dolled up in. That should tell you enough.

And don't get me started on Steven Revere. Is he still knocking about?

Yup. I don't see him on TV much, but I do see him drinking alone in Itaewon every once in a while.

A somewhat fitting end.
