So I finally got my visa sorted and have a flight booked but now I have to worry about baggage or more importantly the excess of it!
Any advice about how to send stuff over to Korea? Anyone used any of the excess baggage companys and had good or bad experiences?
I've tried to pack light but 20kg just isn't enough! |

Which airline are you flying, if I may ask? Most allow TWO 23kg bags, which is 100lbs of stuff. Plus your carry-on.
Have you checked out the cost of bringing an extra bag with you on the plane? Most airlines charge $100+ but that's about the same as shipping 50lbs of anything to Korea. |

Send it parcel post. It takes about 2 months to get here from Canada. It costs some, but you won't have to lug it around with you. Send stuff you won't need right away. Travel light. You'll be happier for it. |

thanks for the replys.
I'm flying Korean Air but as I'm coming from the UK only allowed one 20kg case plus carry on. I'm going to call the airline and see if I can convince them to let me have more! |

get a small suitcase for your carry on - weight is something like 7kg i think, and you also get a laptop as free carry on - just incase you got one.
if you still dont have enough, id say take out bare essentials you can live without for 1-2 months, shoes, summer clothes all that extra crap and just ship it over by boat.
you can call korean air and ask for an extra allowance, though i tried the same and they just said no cos the flight was fully booked - if its not then it might be easier to get it.
also, if your first to check in, and are over by only around 5kg, then they will probably let you on without paying. just make sure to go to a kind looking lady at the check-in counter.
i came here with 32kg, 5kg over the 20kg limit and used the 7kg carry on to its max - but i had snowboards so that took alot of the weight. |

That is only for obese Americans who can't manage to pack into one bag. From rest of the real world it's max of 20kgs |

I paid to check a third bag when I came over a couple months ago from the States and my school reimbursed me the $130 for that when they reimbursed my ticket... I wasn't expecting it but it was greatly appreciated. I told them it was for extra luggage and they had no problems. Maybe I just got lucky. |

It won't work. They will not budge. If you are lucky they might let you slide with an extra 5kg (big maybe). try wearing as much as you can. Those big heavy jackets just wear and take them off on the plane.
Take what you need for winter spring and get the rest shipped over. Also take a good look at what you actually need. |

I flew to Korea from Edinburgh via Frankfurt with Lufthansa.
I booked my flight through a Korean travel agency in London which allowed me to check-in 30Kg of Baggage.
Still, I seemed to have an excess of weight so I took a risk hoping my small carry-on case wouldn't be weighed and crammed about 12Kg into that. Luckily, it worked out alright. Never had my carry-on case weighed at check-in.
Also, I took a small bag to hold some other stuff (passport, tickets, wallet, iPod etc).
Finally, I had a plastic bag containing books (reading material being permitted to be brought on flight) and whatever else I could fit in. |

Excuse me,
I happen to be an American and weigh 117 pounds. I will also have a baggage issue in that Korea has four seasons. I don't think obesity is an issue here. |

I sent stuff over through fed-ex b/c the company i worked for had a big fed-ex discount. My stupid company sent it air freight priority so i ended up paying with discount 1400 USD. And then it got stuck in customs b/c my contract fell through and I had to pay a storage fee of 250,000 won.
But I also packed one extra box for the plane. Its actually not expensive at all to bring an extra box, just make it I think 20x20x20 and no more than 70 pounds. I think it was between 75-100 USd extra but for an extra 70 pounds it could be worth it. Cheaper than sending through the mail. I was over on 3 boxes but just tip the guy who weighs them 30 bucks and it will go away!!! Make sure to check it outside, not in where there are camera are rolling. And I also think the guy thought I was doing humanitarian work in Korea when I told him I was teaching English here so I think he wanted to hook me up b/c of my good deeds hehe |

Wow, you are a hateful person. I think your sobriquet should be Hans Gruber, and hopefully the same fate will be bestowed upon you. Yippee Ka-yeah, Mother #$%@. |

Try to fit as much as you can in your two large suitcases.
Have a smaller suitcase for your carry on filled with your heavy stuff. Then fill a smaller (comuter bag) suitcase that you can fit under your seat. This should allow you to have an extra 8 kgs. |
