Anyone know how long it takes between when you buy minutes on Skype and when it shows up on your account?
I have been trying for two days, and nothing has shown up.
Also, I tried with Yahoo, and my card was rejected without explanation. VISA said they were not to blame. Anyone been able to buy time with Yahoo voice with a credit card from within Korea?
Thanks for the help! |

Are you sure you bought them? I bought the world wide subscription plan. It started to work right away. You might want to check with your VISA one more time. Make sure you didn't pay for $100 worth of minutes. After you log on and say you want to buy, they'll take you to another page where you might have to answer some questions. If you do get skype, I suggest you get the world wide plan. They will give you two incoming calling numbers. This way your family can dial a local number when they want to call you. |

Well, no. That's the problem.
I've got three types of emails from Skype: Problem with your payment, we're processing your order, and payment now due. None of them indicate they have processed my order.
However, the credit card company said they sent Skype the $10, and it's not a problem on their end.
I ended up buying a 15,000 won phone card so I could call the credit card company to check on processing of my credit card payment for $10 of minutes on Skype. |

Well, it shows up immediately for me. As for buying the calling card to call your credit card company, you do know you can call US 1-800 numbers for free with Skype, right? |

No, I didn't.
I just check, and you are right. If there were a sticky thread for most useful hints for living in Korea, this should be on it. Is there?
As to PayPal, you have to have it set up to use it. I canceled my PayPal I had been using to buy stuff from eBay when I came over here, not wanting to risk there being any unauthorized access to my bank account. I applied to create a new account, and have yet to see the deposits show up in my account. I don't have a clue why.
So, there is a lesson here: Don't expect to be able to do anything quickly from Korea. Plan ahead.
Thanks for the tips. Now if someone could just tell me the 800 number to Skype so I could give them a call to find out when I am going to get that $10 credit. |

You only have to pay when you Skype Out .... call to land lines. It is less than 2 cents per minute. |

OKOKOK, I got my PayPal deposits, so that's a start.
Still nothing from Skype. They say it could take up to 24 hours to get the payment processed.
Yahoo is a no go. There's something odd about it. They say it is only for U.S. residents. I wonder if I am being blocked because I am signing up in Korea, even if I am using a U.S. credit card and address? There was something in the press a couple of years ago about Korea trying to ban non-Korean VOIP service within Korea. Is that still going on?
One more tip:
http://www.countrycallingcodes.com/
I don't know they list the country code for the U.S. from Korea as:
001~002 +1*
Does this make any sense to more experienced callers?
I tried 0011, plus the number and that worked. Is that the normal country code for the U.S.? |

I did a customer support request. Got an automated response that it could take 48 hours for them to get back to me.
Hurry up and wait. |

If you are using skype, to call the US, you just put in the region find the US flag, then dial the city area code and phone number.
If you aren't calling from Skype, but from a land line, then you would call 001+1 (area code) phone number. The first 001 is a long distance provided either SK or LG, something like that. You can also use 002 or 00700. |

Some good suggestions here. Thanks for the advice.
With Skype, the way to go is start with a one month subscription. I got unlimited US for $6. Then you can get one year of phone in, ie a telephone number for people to call you, at half price -- $30 a year. That brings it to the Yahoo phone in price.
After that, unless you are going to be doing some might heavy talking, buying minutes is probably the way to go. After all, all you have to do is get the person you are talking to regularly to sign up with Skype and you get free calls. Right?
As to Yahoo, it would have been nice using them, given the IM link. Keeps things a little neater. But I couldn't get it to work signing up. I sent some inquiries to the help contact and got back computer messages.
One said Yahoo Voice is not actually operated by Yahoo; it is contracted out to a company that shares Yahoo's commitment to quality. So Yahoo can't help me, I should contact that other company.
Sorry, Yahoo. You were a great company. In 2001. Today, you aren't worth the trouble. |

Can anyone tell me how to change your base calling country?
I have it set to the US now, but would like to call within Korea. So I guess I have to use a country code.
But how would I change the base country so Korea is my local country, and no codes?
(Actually, you could have two accounts, one with your home country, one with Korea, pay as you go, to keep it simple.)
Thanks for the help! |
