I am trying to decide on a laptop to buy; I want an English keyboard, with the big backspace key, no hangeul/hanja keys, etc. Which of course means I can't get such a machine here in Korea, and must get one sent here from abroad. So: what's the most efficient way these days to find/order/pay for an English-language laptop, international order?

LG and Samsung (and perhaps other Korean laptop makers) make laptops for the English market; if I learn about one I like, I might actually end up buying one .... is there any way to buy one of these made-for-foreign-market Korean laptops right here in Korea?

Yea, keyboards are only 20,000 won to switch. Also many computer stores sell used labtops from USA I bought a labtop for 150,000 US keyboard. Then put my own office onit.

One thing though even though you may get a US keyboard chances are you will get Korean Windows unless you have your own from the states or download it online.

If you do buy a labtop from the states I do suggest Samsuang. Only because they have an international warrenty. Companies like dell, hp don't. They will say we honnor the warrenty in USA. You are out of USA so to bad.

Buy a labtop on ebay, those ship internationaly. Or have a friend in states buy off bestbuy.com (or you). Ship it from bestbuy to yoru moms. Then mom to house in Korea.

So when are you hooking me up with an ESL job in Argentina? Santa Cruz? Somewhere south, maybe?

Laughing When I pay off 50k in student loans and when I can afford to make peanuts.

I don't want to hijack this thread so I'll keep this short.

2001 I studied abroad for 3 weeks in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. I went through the American Field Service, a great organization established after WWII to promote cultural exchange.

2006: After studying Spanish in highschool and in college I studied abroad for almost 1 year in Buenos Aires, Argentina, attending the Universidad de Belgrano.

While doing this I taught ESL under the table with a company for $10 Pesos per hour, about $3.33 USD per hour. I did this for about 2-3 hours per day and made about 200-300 persos per month. With my experience now I can easily get a job paying 20-25 Argentine Pesos in Buenos Aires with the connections I have their. I taught at American Express, Radio 10 and InfoBAE Newspaper to local executives.

Argentina is an incredible country and Korea pales VERY MUCH in comparison to it. The culture, food, language etc.... its my passion. Anyways, if you want a job down there, you basically have 2 options.

1. Go through a recruiter if you can find one. There is a site called teachersmex or something like that, that hires for public schools.

2. This is the most popular way. BUy the local English paper and answer one of the many ads in their. They vary with pay and quality, and for the most part you have to travel to the customer. So you will travel alot but its worth it IMHO. The paper is called the buenos aires herald. They have a site, just google it.

If you need more information just PM me. Why Santa Cruz? BS AS, Rosario, Mendoza, Cordoba and my favorite SALTA!!!! Oh how I love that city.

OK, not so short. Hope this helped.

Buena Suerte,
Jesse

Edit: When I said that Korea pales very much compared to Argentina, I ment that in a respectful way as to my likings. I find Latin Culture much more attractive, hence my Sanish and LAS degree. I do very much enjoy Korea and am fascinated by the culture and people here. I in no way ment to disrespect that. Wink

kasain, thank you for your kind and helpful advice. I never knew you could change the keyboards on a laptop! I will probably go with Samsung then.

Oh and by the way, Binch Lover:
This is obviously your first time off the farm in Kansas or Arkansas or whatever, seeing the big world. Apparently you didn't know that English is spoken by many non-native English speakers around the world, and that the international scene is full of working travellers who use the best English they can to communicate. A little practice will enable you to identify these people, but until you are a few years older, I suggest you refrain from offering your opinions -- on any subject whatsoever.

Most HP dealers in Yongsan (maybe all of them) will load English windows onto your computer. I've done it, and helped others do it. Takes an extra 30 mins. I've never tried switching-out the keyboard, but I'm sure you could do that later.
