Yeah, Bush better hurry up and declare martial law or bomb Iran or something.
I guess he's asleep at the switch again. |

Interesting that I've been real glad of Obama getting elected....I thought this was shared by non-American friends.
BUT...now that Israelis are killing Palestinians...I'm getting my non-American westenern friends blaming individual Americans again, and telling me Obama (despite not even sitting in office yet) is to blame, and that is America is going to get bombed for this, blah blah blah.
It never ends. I certainly expect that to continue, and probably moreso since most Americans abroad supported Obama over McCain.
The main thing to me, however, is a strong domestic policy, focusing on domestic issues and domestic needs. |

Op-Ed Columnist
Hes Leaving. Really.
By GAIL COLLINS
Tonight President George W. Bush bids adieu to the American people.
Excitement mounts.
The man has been saying goodbye for so long, hes come to resemble one of those reconstituted rock bands that have been on a farewell tour since 1982. We had exit interviews by the carload and then a final press conference on Monday, in which he reminisced about his arrival on the national stage in 2000. Just seemed like yesterday, he said.
I think I speak for the entire nation when I say that the way this transition has been dragging on, even yesterday does not seem like yesterday. And the last time George W. Bush did not factor into our lives feels like around 1066.
So far, the Bush farewell appearances have not drawn a lot of rave reviews. (Most striking, perhaps, was a critique of that final press conference from Ted Anthony of The Associated Press: It all felt strangely intimate and, occasionally, uncomfortable, in the manner of seeing a plumber wearing jeans that ride too low.) A Gallup poll did find that his approval rating had risen slightly since they began, but this was probably due to enthusiasm for the part about his going away. |

Is it safe to go home, yet? |

Wish he would just shut up and slink off to his McMansion in Dallas.
The Crawford ranch. Doesn't need to keep up that pretense anymore. |

History begins its judgment on George Bush in four days, 8 hours and 52 minutes.
Or less:

A bit like "A Christmas Carol."
"I am the Ghost of History Present. Come with me. We're going on a little journey." |

Never understood the supposed need "to hang in there." How exactly will your lives change after 20 January? From dire to what? What do you expect will happen to you after 20 January? |

Yep, the U.S. will have a president that not only did NOT actually win his vote in the senate, but has not really done anything worth credit.
I fear for my country.

I've been waiting for January 20, 2009 since January 20, 1969. It's been a long dark night. |

But that actually makes a lot of sense. I mean if I were a liberal I'd agree.

The old, tired detritus and reminents of Reaganesque philosophy will be washed away, and conservatives will have to establish their values based on a new foundation, just as they had to in the 60s.
This is also an opportunity for the Republicans to eliminate the last of the lingering racism in their party.
Its kind of a big deal, Gopher. |

Don't hold your breath on that one--for too many Repubs "real America" still isn't black or latino. |

Interesting article.
Quote: |
Some Republicans argued that electing a black chairman could prove helpful as the party struggles to rebuild.
"Race is not a consideration of why a person should become chairman of the RNC, but if the nation can celebrate its first African-American president, I would certainly think the Republican Party could celebrate its first African-American chairman," said Jim Greer, the Florida Republican chairman, who endorsed Steele last week. "There certainly is an advantage of a credible message of inclusion if you have a minority as chairman." |
Wouldn't that "helpful...advantage" be a lovely bit of window dressing!
'Specially for these types:
Quote: |
Nevertheless, racial codes and strains have emerged in the contest. Katon Dawson, the South Carolina Republican chairman, quit his membership in an all-white country club soon before joining the race. And another candidate, Chip Saltsman, the Tennessee party chairman, was roundly criticized for distributing a holiday CD to party members that included a parody song called "Barack the Magic Negro." |
This coming from a party that has always squawked how unfair affirmative action is. |
