Nicaragua needs a bump! Although I think there would be better places in Latin America than Nicaragua.
I would like to check out Leon and Grenada though. |

Nicaragua is the most beautiful country I've ever been to - The people are incredible, beautiful, and friendly. Women do get hit on quite a bit but I think that's the same as anywhere in Latin America, and I'm sure it would calm down if you became a regular part of the community. Cost of living is dirt cheap and it's super easy to travel around the country and into the surrounding area. Crime rate against foreigners in Managua is the same as any other big city, but in the rest of the country, especially in the mountains, it didn't seem like crime was an issue at all.
I miss the place, can you tell? |

Ya-ta - There is/was a wonderful documentary about a British couple who bought an island off the coast and tried to start a business/life there.
It was wonderful TV but a terrible life. They went as a couple with two elementary school aged kids. After a while it turned out that the guy was banging the hired help and it kind of put the marriage on the rocks.
It went downhill from there. Basically their island was 'bought' (illegaly) by some Nicaraguan terrorists who forced them off at gunpoint. Previous to this wifey and the kids had already left. The show had footage of these dudes rocking up with machine guns and telling the british owner to basically ****-off. It wasn't like he sold out, he was forced out at gunpoint.
It was an intersting show but probably really sucky for the guy and his family involved. This was a weekly show which was about Brits moving abroad and making a new life for themselves. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes it didn't. I believe the name of the show was a "A place in the Sun" if you want to search it out and download it, if that's possible.
Anyway, if you buy property over there be sure to buy somewhere which doesn't have tourist potential otherwise you might be robbed at gunpoint of your land.
Whilst I'm quite negative about buying land over there I have two friends who bought a piece of land on the beach and are operating a business there now. I worry about their health (as in bullets in the head) but they seem to be doing OK.
Good luck if you go that route. |

| I would retire to Scotland, but thats a long way away yet, going to have my clean fresh air, mountains to wake up to, and my very own vegetable patch, maybe some chickens too, because of the colder climate in the highlands, i could spend my time knitting jumpers for them, wow sounds so wonderful writing about it. |
My wife and I are also planning to retire in Scotland. It's either going to be a small town on Loch Tay called Killin or on the Isle of Skye. |
