Can somebody explain to me how to start using these (in layman's terms)?

Or lead me to a great page that clearly explains the process?

Thanks in advance.

download a torrent client like bitComet (do a Google search)

Then go to one of the sites below to have a look for movies, books, tv shows, music, etc. click "download torrent" for anything you're interested in.

I have also found utorrent to be fast and clean, and it has a very small 'footprint' in terms of CPU usage.
Probably most of the downloaders are pretty good though.

Yes. utorrent is by far the best. Some sites won't accept other clients, so don't bother with them. utorrent the way to go.
