My roommate told me that our place got "cased" two nights ago. Another roommate was sitting in the living room and saw someone on our balcony, in the window. They chased him away.

If you see someone casing your place, confront them, even if you're a woman. These guys go for low hanging fruit.

About a year ago I had a guy trying to pick the lock on my front door. I think he had one of those 'pick guns' (i don't know the proper word). Anyway, it makes a click-click-click sound as it's doing your thing on the lock. It was in the middle of the night when I was sleeping. One of my cats woke me up because he was growling then I heard the sound. My other cat ran to the front door which triggered the front-door-light-sensor. It was one of those opaque glass doors which you can't see through, but you can see the light. That stopped the guy quick sharp.

I was borderline tempted to go outside and beat the guy for trying to break-in, but I figured that it'd be bad for my future. If I beat the guy then maybe 2 months later he'd be outside my door one morning with a dozen buddies and kill me. In my situation I think it was better to let him be scared off rather than confronting him because of the possible reprecussions.

Lights are your friend. Especially lights with sensors. A light with a sensor will do wonders for scaring off anybody trying to get in. No burglar is going to sit there and pick a lock with a bright light over him.

Yeah if you beat him, odds are you'd be in jail for beating up an innocent local. He was just drunk and was trying to open the wrong door. Sure he managed to gain entry to the place next door and raped the wife. But he was drunk. And he's very sorry.

A friend got her place broken into out in Suwon. Actually my cousin in Mississauga got his place broken into. I think in both places they gained entry the same way: they just took a crowbar and a lot of brute force and tore the door open.

Wouldn't hurt while you're sleeping to put a chair in front of your door or something that's going to make a helluva noise as he gains entry...

I think I read on here a while back that somebody recommended getting all new locks when you move in to your new place. What else would you all recommend?

I'm moving to Korea late Feb for the March session.

i definitely recommend changing the locks... not only because of past residents keeping the key, but also because your boss often has the key... can't tell you how many stories i've heard of employers letting themselves in unannounced...

I just moved into a new place with those electronic coded locks. Problem is the employer, the recruiter taxi guy, and the front doorman know the code. I don't like that at all.

I'd like to re-program the code, anyone know how this is done?

Also, anyone have any advice on what to say to my employer when he says I can't/mustn't reprogram it?
thanks...

I have one of those too. If you open the back where the batteries are, there will be a couple of buttons. Play around with them until you get it to work. I would suggest asking a korean co-worker who has an electric lock to help you.

My door lock had a little button you could push that would lock the door and prevent someone from opening the door from the outside with the key. A handy little thing to keep your boss from walking in with his spare key.

I think that's a small price to pay.

A big holiday is coming up and many people will be gone. It will be prime time for burglery.

Changed the code on my lock the minute after my co-teacher left...

I also figured out that if you don't set all of your electronic keys at the same time, the ones not set stop working... My school and my landlady both have a key that does nothing now Very Happy
(As I found out for sure the other day, when the land lady was standing in my hallway as I came home... Instead of using my key I punched in my code and she went "ahhh" and walked away LOL)

One day a couple of months ago there was slamming near my door. My wife and I were startled. We have a door lock sort of like a chain lock back west but it is a straight bar. It lets the door open about six inches. I saw an arm coming through and the guy was trying to bash the door opened.

I growled, "What the f*ck!" He didn't stop. So I threw all of my weight on the door and I'm a big guy. I kept doing it a few times until there was screaming and the arm went limp. I said I'm going to kill him, I heard screaming and it eventually went away. The manager came down asking me what happened and I told her.

She said the guy was probably drunk and in the wrong building. I'm prettury sure I broke the dudes arm. I've done it once in an armbar and there was a wet popping noise and visible give in his arm.

Being drunk is no excuse. If he got inside or the door was unlocked I would of killed him then gone to jail. I'm fine with that. Korean laws be damned. This is my home, my domain, my wife is here. I will protect it and her.

Of course, I'll just express remorse. Then like a Korean rapist i'll get a suspended sentence and they will blame my wife for not telling me to stop and not understanding Korean culture.

Oh my, your avatars are larger than 100 pixels. Way too large, even larger than I used to have with Angkor Wat. Did Dimitrius warn you yet?

Yeah he did. I'm not sure what the problem is. Avatars about 200-250 don't really screw up the board layout.
