There is a whole theory about this house vs horse binary which was put forth by a writer named Robert Kroetsch.
He postulates that the "house" based literature appeals more to women and the "horse" based adventures appeal more to men.
Here is a dissertation which mentions Kroetsch's theory, Unfortunately, his is not online because of its age.

I see where you're coming from with this. I do think that the stationary setting had some of the same elements of the other series, just a different way of approaching them. In the other series, the protagonists stumbled upon new races or phenomenon, whereas in DS9, the new races or phenomenon stumbled upon the station. They also did their own venturing from time to time in the gamma quadrant.
The one thing I liked about DS9 more than the other series though, was that the setting wasn't so sterile. In the other series, everyone on the ship was federation, or in Voyager, part of the crew. On DS9, though, you had all the races either doing business, passing by, fighting or smuggling.
There were some things I wasn't too fond of in DS9, though. I really didn't care about the Bajorans or their wacky religion. I got into the dominion war, but they had to tack on the nonsense with Dukat, Kai Win and the Pah Wraiths.

I sympathize with you Greedy Bones, there are certainly too many choices to please everyone. But I have a suggestion. ***Why not limit the choices to Sci-fi series set in space? This won't please everyone, but it will limit the field, and those who feel the need can start a separate poll for the other kinds of Sci-fi. Tricky for some of the series people have listed as I think some of them were occasionally set in space. Didn't Outer Limits have some episodes in space?
Although I liked the idea of DS9, I didn't like most of the follow through. It just didn't come across as alien enough.
My favorites as far as space series are concerned would be Voyager, Enterprise, Firefly, and STTNG, as well as Farscape. In no particular order. I am working through that last series right now as a friend gave me the whole series on CD.
I didn't vote because I am afraid of the aliens watching....
*** Edit: I realize you have already done this - what I meant to say was that you could point this out and someone else can start a separate thread under a different category. |

How about cutting out that stupid URL so this page is readable? |

I wasn't aware of BSG being either the original series or the newer series or both, so I skipped that and voted for Star Trek TNG...simply because it was my favorite ST series of all time.
I do agree, if you had lumped all ST into one category and put a few more choices, it would have been a more well rounded vote.
I also think making a distinction between sci-fi and space exploration sci-fi might have been good. I assumed you mean space exploration/occurs in space type of sci-fi based on your list. |

| this is a very egocentric, and therefore useless, poll. it's obvious the OP thinks only space operas are worthy sci-fi, which is fine, everyone has their tastes, but he shouldnt make that assumption about everyone else when conducting a poll. you dont need 40 slots, or whatever, but you can have some variety with 10 or 12 choices. offering star trek as a whole is not a bad idea |

Did you notice how many times I asked if there was a way to edit the poll? I wish I had included some of the other shows. I put up the first series that came to mind. I first thought of star trek and included the ones I thought were the most popular. I then added other shows that came to mind. B5 and BSG came to mind because they were/are recent topics on this board. Farscape came to mind because I'm currently watching it. Doctor Who came to mind because I recently saw the Christmas episode.
If you have such a problem with the original choices, kindly instruct me as to how to change them. |

Well if he were to add other sci-fi besides space type shows, I'd expect to see Lost, Heroes, the 4400, Doctor Who, etc. in the list. |

Ugh, The 4400 infuriates me. It started with so much promise, and turned to crap very quickly. And don't get me started on that ending... |

| Man, why does everyone love Voyager and Enterprise so much?? I liked DS9 a lot and enjoyed the station as a setting. I thought it added a lot to have a huge station that was like a city with an underbelly, but I grew up with TNG and still think it's my favorite of the Star Treks. Voyager didn't really do anything for me, and Enterprise was ok, but why they had what sounded like an 80's monster ballad as their theme song rather than the orchestral music of the previous 4 series is completely beyond me. |
I am an avid Star Trek fan, love both the original and Next Generation in their own right. I liked Voyager but can't say I've seen every episode, except of course the last bit of story arc to close out the series. I tried several times to get into DS9 but everytime I watched an episode the story was something so mundane as Quark (the annoying bartender, frackin hated him) ripping somebody off and trying to cover his tracks or some such crap as that. Sisko was a wuss compared to Kirk, Picard and Janeway, and he was commander of a frackin Space Station, where's the fun in that? I just couldn't get into the series, although I heard the whole war with the continueum or whoever they were was a good story line.
I just watched the premiere of Battlestar Galactica and am sad that it's going to be ending with 9 more episodes. I'm skeptical at the prequel
that is coming out though.
I gave the first 4 or 5 eps of Firefly a try and really I don't know what all the hype was about. It was an average show at best and didn't have me on the edge of my seat wanting more, in fact there was no incentive to watch more considering it was a cancelled series. No use wasting my time. |
