I just got offered a contract at CDI in upcoming February. I just graduated from university last fall 2008 and I haven't recieved a diploma yet....I don't know how long it takes but I want to work as soon as possible. In the contract, it states that you need your original diploma to submit to the ministry of education during training week.. Can I submit official transcripts or letter from the school stating that I graduated? any advice for people who have a similar situation as me. besides another question is for anybody who worked at CDI in any location, give me more information regarding how housing is like, the monthly pay, and the first week of training?... Thanks |

did you attend the fall ceremony?
because thats when you get your dip.
if you are waiting to walk in spring you can call your school and ahve them mail you your dip.
thats what happened to my friend. she decided last minute to graduate with a 3 yr degree and thought about walking in the fall but then she realized she wanted her parents to be there so now she's going to walk in spring and the school told her that they can mail out her dip |

You'll need to send in your actual diploma or a copy with apostille to get the visa, and you can't work with CDI or anyone else without the visa (not legally, at least).
I wouldn't work for CDI--I don't like being filmed all day. |

Oh, well, in that case, it'll naturally vary from employer to employer. CDI is pretty flexible.
That being said, I wouldn't work for them. They offered me almost 40k/hr. to teach, but no amount of money is worth being under surveillance every moment or work. Maybe I'm too western, but that is too close to fascism for my taste. |

I agree. Maybe not about the fascism thing, but I do believe the CCTVs do really BAD things to your mind.
CCTVs for security purposes? Fine. But for performance evaluation purposes? Absolutely no way. |

You're still supposed to have a university diploma. |

I was in nearly the same exact situation with CDI. I am also a gyopo with an F4.
I let them know ahead of time that it could take a bit to get my diploma due to issues at my school (I graduated early, but didn't complete all my payments so they held it, then they lost it by the time I did complete the payments). They didn't seem to mind since F4 grants much more freedom.
CDI was pretty understanding. I worked for probably a month and a half without the diploma. Got it mailed directly to Korea from my university. All worked out in the end.
As for my experience there, I thought it was great. If you're far from teacher material, you will have a tough time with the constant criticism from head instructors that must watch your CCTV at least once a week. If you're good, you will rarely have to talk to them and it will be smooth sailing. Prep was cake after a couple weeks due to their organized textbooks.
All in all, CDI isn't for everyone. Training the first week was a bitch (unpaid, grammar test, mock demos in front of other trainees). Work itself was comfortable and they pay better than most. Expect to pay your own rent and find your own apartment. Still works out to be a higher salary than the typical starting hagwon.
I no longer work there, but the only reason I left was that I chose to go down the SAT/AP hagwon route, which generally pays more than any typical English hagwon (given it is more difficult to teach and requires more hours) |

The cameras are rarely a problem, ask actual teachers that work at CDI.
During your first month the head teachers will give you some advice, after that you are left on your own for the most part. If you are doing your job, then you will probably never be spoken to again about your videos. You can be flexible in your class, many teachers show videos, create activities etc. that is not a problem. And keep in mind foreigners are watching your videos, not Korean staff, so common sense is usually applied to critiques.
Bottom line, if you are a half-decent teacher than you will have no problem. If you plan on sleeping or not teaching, then don't come to CDI.
You turned down 40k? If you took the offer, you could pull in well over 8 million won this month with intensives. Hope you are enjoying the camera free hagwon. |

I took a university post instead. 8 million won sounds nice. 50 hours of teaching time a week? No thanks. |

that's a bit exaggerated. 50 hour weeks or 200 hour months are nearly impossible even with intensives. plus, when he said "near 40k", it could have meant anywhere from 36-39k.
still, i have nothing bad to say about CDI. my workload at the SAT/AP hagwon is infinitely more difficult. creating your own material and curriculum sucks.
oh, and intensives are optional by the way. it's all up to you whether you want them. they will never ever force you to do them.
in fact, some teachers are often turned away because of an overabundance of intensive teachers. |

Depends on your branch I guess.
I'm working 210 hours this month with intensives. A few teachers at my school make around 40k, although I do get less. So well I'll be shy of 8 million, someone making 40 could definitely pull that in. Also, during intensives you get extra money for grading essays and bonuses for teaching prep courses.
It is possible if you're willing to put in the time. |

i'm guessing it's a franchise branch?
