My wife and I are thinking of taking a detour through Europe this summer when we leave Korea. In order to do this, we'll need to ship most of our clothing, our new PC, and a few odds and ends back to the States.

I've heard tell of boat shipping as a cost-effective alternative to regular airmail, but I'm not sure about the specifics. If we shipped a big box, maybe 50lbs. worth of stuff (not really sure about dimensions at this point), what might be a safe ballpark figure for the cost? Any significant disadvantages to shipping this way?

I'd appreciate some advice. Smile

If the boat sinks you lose everything. It taks a long time too.

Takes forever, but you're insured just like everybody else. You might have to endure the stench of Port of Newark in order to make your claim on the insurance, but yes, you get insurance just like everything else.

scroll down to surface mail.

The USA is zone 3.

you can ship up to 20kg ~48lb in a box. The post office offers good rigid boxes (sizes 1 through 6) and does all the taping up for you if you want.

I shipped two filled both a size 5 and size six in June, the post office told me 2 month, they arrived together after 6 weeks.

PM me if you want more details. It's very simple

thanks very much for the info, jay-shi.

another idea i had was to fly into--say--rome with our luggage, ship the luggage onward via freight (??) to paris, and then claim it and fly out from paris to the states a couple/few weeks later. i'm not even sure if this is an option, or if might be cost prohibitive...but maybe?

has anyone done anything like this before?
