Does there happen to be one in Cheong-Ju? My Uni students are taking the 3rd phase of of the Korean English teacher exam (임 용 고 시) on Thursday. The third phase includes an interview where they're required to answer questions with a sort of extemporaneous brief speech, and I think this would be excellent preparation for next year's seniors.

There isn't a club in Cheongju right now. TM is rapidly growing in Korea and new clubs do start, but it will take someone with initiative to start one in Cheongju or in any other city that doesn't have one. I'm surprised there isn't one in Incheon.

PM me if you are serious about finding the information (it's on toastmasters.org) or talking with some people who have recently started a club in Korea.

I was going to visit the South of the River Toastmasters group but I thought I read somewhere on their site they charge you to go there every time there is a meeting. Do they really do that and what's with that?

A couple of the clubs don't have sponsors or free rooms. They have to collect money from participants to pay for the room itself. Toastmaster Clubs do not make any money on this, it's a necessary charge in order to hold the meeting. I guess they could meet outside on the street, Laughing . Membership in Toastmasters is 3.50 USD a month, but people in some clubs choose to pay more each meeting instead of traveling to another club for a free room.

It sucks, yes, but it is better than not having a club at all. I know KH Toastmasters in Hyehwa is currently renting a room and has to charge about 5,000 per person each meeting to pay for it, but they are searching for a donated room at this very moment. Many people, foreigners and Koreans, consider what a professional class or hogwan would charge to learn public speaking in a proven method, so many consider it an deal even with the rare room fee.

This is not the norm, though, most clubs have donated rooms. Contact prospective clubs if you are are strapped for cash and want to find the free ones.

It just seemed like a lot. Their site said they regularly had 20-30 members or something, and they charged 6000 won per meeting. $120-$180 to rent a room for an hour?

My friends have held philosophy club meetings at those nice coffee shops with private rooms (good for about 8 people comfortably) for several hours and it costs about $10 or something. There's a big screen to plug our laptops into for Powerpoints. This coffee shop is near Gangnam station; the South of The River Toastmasters club is located near that station as well.

Yes, it is a lot for each club to pay. TOZ (Time On Zest) rents meeting rooms, this is who the South River and KH clubs rent from. Many clubs have 20-40 people per meeting and need a contained, professional environment. Coffee shops simply aren't big enough, are open to random customers and could cancel meeting reservations with no notice.

On the bright side, TOZ locations are clean and staffed. Everyone gets free coffee, teas, sodas and water, too. So if you look at having 2 freshly brewed coffees during the meeting, it would work out to what you would pay at a coffee shop for 2 coffees and a less professional meeting room.

I don't like having to pay for meeting rooms at all and I hope all clubs in Korea can find sponsors or donated rooms in the near future.

Now that sounds interesting. Can you send me a pm about this club?

A room that fits about 30 at TOZ is 60,000 won an hour...but many clubs run 2 hour meetings (hence 120,000 won). Some clubs get bigger rooms (cost more). Free places are great, but you'd be surprised (or maybe not) at the bureaucracy involved in getting a uni, even one you work at, to let people use a completely unused room- lots of issues with security, staff, etc. are brought up, valid or not.

Even through the holidays, Toastmasters clubs in Korea are going strong. An official district in Korea isn't too far away and now is a great opportunity to get involved during the rapid growth.

For all veterans and newbies in Korea wanting to improve communication and leadership skills as well as network with local and international people in Korea, I highly recommend visiting your local Toastmasters club.

Bump.

Great info. Unfortunately, I'm out in the sticks, but the Daegu meet could be possible for me.

For what it's worth, I'd be especially interested in Toasting Green/environmental/Ecologism issues maybe once every couple of months or so. I'd consider getting up to Seoul if any others were interested.

This is a bump, and to ask if any posters have visited a Toastmasters club since I started this.

If so, which club did you go to and what did you think?

I know there are people on this board who are Toastmasters members, but I don't think any new people have joined due to the Dave's post.

Clubs are growing due to advertisements and word of mouth. It has a long way to go in Korea to battle strong districts like Japan or Singapore.

To any new teachers in Korea, especially the new recruits of public school teachers: You are always welcome in Toastmaster clubs in Korea. I promise the professional development and the networking, both professional and social, will be highly rewarding.

That's really good to have the open clubs where anyone can go as the clubs at home are closed corporate clubs. With being able to get in, you have real networking capability to make friends and possibly more from a professional standpoint. Maybe great way to find your way to corporate jobs and privates and smart professional people you can learn something from yourself.

I want to join, but I don't guess there's enough population in Gangwon-do to support a club. Another reason why I should had gone city. I'm getting quite bored, lonesome, and wanting access to things to do, people to see, and places to go. You just can't hop up to Seoul after work and be back to work by the next morning and weekends is where you get there early Saturday afternoon and leave early Sunday afternoon for a fairly late Sunday night arrival back home. That's just too much bus riding and not enough playing.

There is no club near you, but there are people in Gangwon-do who would participate. You can start a club in Gangwon-do. The international headquarters website has information about that. Jinju now has a club that was recently started by a foreigner. As someone helping Korea become an official district, I would love to see more clubs in Korea and a club started in NE South Korea.

If you by chance start a club, other people and I are happy to help you in addition to the intl. headquarters.
