I just returned from a vacation in the Philippines and I am glad to say that both my Standard Chartered (SC) card and KEB Global Check Card worked fine. FYI, SC charged a higher foreign transaction fee than my KEB card when I withdrew equal amounts from both.

Where did you get your international KEB card? I have been denied an international card from 3 KEB branches.

KB told me that my debit card should work overseas. When I told them that it didn't seem to work at ATMs in Guam and Japan, they insisted that it should have worked. I just tried it again last week in China, but still no luck. As a side note, my American Citibank card worked at all these ATMs.

Unless your working for a Univ. , PS job, or big chain hagwon(I think), they won't give you an international credit card without a huge deposit(2,000,000 won).

I just got my international credit card from KEB! Rolling Eyes

I have a friend who told me KEB was actively recruiting the foreign staff at her univ change banks giving her int check cards that look identical to my US check card. shes headed to thailand this week, if it works down there i'm changing banks as Woori still wont give me a new one even after showing them all this stuff from the govt.

Thing is she went to the KEB in Itaewon to get t/c's because she doesnt trust them and all they had was US$500 denominations (do you really think the money changers in thailand will cash $500 t/cs?) because they said "We dont carry many t/cs anymore as people have cash cards" another obstacle for foreigners to get their money out of the country

Been banking with KB* since October 2003. Had an International Card all this time and used it all over Asia and back in Canada as well. Lost my wallet recently and tried to get a replacement card. They told me no. I was quite adamant and argued with the teller, bank manager and then some guy over the phone in Seoul at the head office for over an hour. No dice. Was not happy about the double standard bit, especially as I consider Korea basically my home now.

Went to IBK and they said no worries. Was pleased. They opened an account and everything was ok until they got back a fax from their head office saying no international cards for waygooks. They were stunned and quite apologetic.

So, I started calling up banks instead of visiting in person. Nonghyup, Woori, HSBC (this was shocking for "the world's local bank"), Hana and Shinhan all refused. The only one that said ok was KEB. I needed a contract from my uni, my passport and that was it. No problems to get the card. This was at the Manchon branch in Daegu.

I got my KEB Global card from the downtown branch in Gwangju. I just went to the foreign exchange desk, told them I had an account and that I was going away for vacation and needed an international atm card. Ez-pz with an English speaking teller. I just needed my ARC and passport. They didn't need my contract or a deposit. If they deny you, you should print out this page and tell them you want the STANDARD card:
http://www.keb.co.kr/netc/en/expat/card.html

It says there's a 10,000 won annual fee, but I didn't have to pay it.

The banks in Korea will give you a Global CREDIT CARD. However, if you want an ATM/DEBIT card so yu can pull money from your bank account, you are S.O.L.

So, your card will work overseas as long as you use it to make purchases or make cash advances.

Getting a CREDIT CARD that works overseas isn't a problem with all of us Foreigners. Its getting that ATM/DEBIT card that will allow us to withdraw money from out account overseas that is the big mystery.

Sorry to be a little off topic, but if you use one of these Korean ATM cards in the U.S., does it automatically do the exchange rate? If it does, does it use the current rate?

You can pm me if you want so the thread doesn't get hijacked by my questions.

With internet banking it is so easy to maintain your accounts, I can understand wanting a local branch for some things, but why put up with the lack of interest here when it benefits you to maintain an account or two back home as well?

Are you wiring money to your overseas accounts through your Korean bank online? Or do you have to speak to someone at the bank to wire it for you and then you pay the bills online?

You should be able to get a KEB Global debit card from the branch that's in the free trade zone in Masan. If you try to use a KEB Global card, you have to make sure the ATM you choose has one of the proper logos.
