Pathetic. Just stick to your usual sermons and diatribes to us and stop boring us with calls that our president waste his time on "Canadian content." Do you expect him to read the bloody list in French, too...?

Quote:
Canada's public radio is asking listeners to pick 49 songs that will "best define" the country to the incoming president of its southern neighbor.

Online voting for "49 Songs from North of the 49th Parallel" ends Friday, and CBC Radio 2 will unveil and play the picks on the day of Barack Obama's presidential inauguration Tuesday.

"One of the best ways to know Canada is through the depth and breath of our artistic expression," Denise Donion, CBC's executive director, said on the station's web site.

Obama's taste in music runs the gamut from old-school R&B to blues and classical.

"His playlist could definitely benefit from some Canadian content," the station said...

Darn 'tooting we do. And in Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun as well. After all if he is the Saviour of America (as some people apparently believe) it should be no sweat for him to learn 2-3 foreign languages.

When is he billed to walk on water by the way? Laughing

A surprising number of Canadians actually went down to the USA to help him get elected. I know at least two.

It's not a bad idea to send a gift to the inaguration. What is kind of presumptuous is to think that Obama is going to want to spend time listening to all these songs. (What if every country sent him a tape?)

Why are people so P.O.ed about this?

Holy shit. IT's a minor, minor gesture to an incoming president but we have journalists calling Canada pathetic, and posters whining about whining Canadians.

Good lord people, way to shoot a gift horse in the mouth.

This is not a gift. It is about Canadians talking about, praising Canada, per usual. Blah.

Mises: my apologies. I did not see your thread.

Ok, it just looks arrogant. They are going to play the 49 songs that best define Canada on the day of America's inauguration. Wouldn't that be more appropriate for Canada Day? I'm watching the inauguration here and I can't think of many things more pathetic than The Hockey Song, in comparison to what has been going on in DC.

Did any of you see Beyonce sing America the Beautiful? Unreal.

If Koreans were all trying to vote on 49 Korean songs we need to get on Obama's iPod, I would laugh my ass off for 3 days straight. This is just as silly, of course.

You have to admit, though, Goph. Contrary to your theory that anti-Americanism continues apace no matter who's in the White House, this is a definite departure from the last eight years. I guarantee you that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was NOT polling its listeners to send a gift tape to the last innaguration.

And check out the logo on the website, with the Maple Leaf/Stars and Stripes headphones. It's like we're now supposed to be best buds with the Americans or something.

what country doesn't do that?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/share

share
1   /ʃɛər/ noun, verb, shared, shar⋅ing.
noun
1. the full or proper portion or part allotted or belonging to or contributed or owed by an individual or group.
2. one of the equal fractional parts into which the capital stock of a joint-stock company or a corporation is divided.
verb (used with object)
3. to divide and distribute in shares; apportion.
4. to use, participate in, enjoy, receive, etc., jointly: The two chemists shared the Nobel prize.

i was under the impression that countries did stuff like this for foreign heads of state. "hey, this is from our country. we hope you like it. we want to be pals". did you expect that canadians would come bearing gold, frankincense and myrrh?

obama has shown himself to be 1. pretty open-minded and 2. a music lover. what the hell is the matter with giving him some music? i think you're reading way too much into what seems to me a bit of innocent nationalism. silly, but not as opportunistic and sinister as you're making it out to be. i think obama would see it as a charming and kind gesture.

and i would also bet that he could actually read the list in french... something that i doubt your last president could pull off without going back to university for 20 or so years.

that said, it is pretty tacky. i'd hate to see the white house's storage rooms and all the awkward trinkets and baubles that presidents have received over the years.

Stephen Harper should take Barack Obama by the hand at their yet-to-be scheduled meeting and lead the president in a whole new foreign policy direction.
