I'm coming to Korea soon, and right now I'm thinking that I'm going to bring a thousand bucks, half converted to won, and half in traveler's cheques (in American currency).

I did a search on the forums, and the opinions on cashing traveler's cheques when you first arrive in Korea seem to range from "go to any bank, it's no problem" to "it's a huge pain and you'll have a hard time cashing them." So... which is it? Will I be able to just walk into a bank without an account and cash them? Or will that be more of a hassle than it's worth?

Has no one attempted to cash a traveler's cheque without a bank account?

Go to a Korean Exchange Bank branch (KEB). You'll get your money immediately. Any other bank will want to hold onto your traveler's checks for weeks to verify their authenticity Rolling Eyes .

If it's a thousand bucks, yes. Just come with cash. 99.999% odds you won't get mugged. Might as well convert the whole wad into won.
