I am British (I'm here as an English teacher). My girlfriend is Chinese (she's here on a student visa). We want to get married in Seoul. How exactly would we go about that? Any advice on the process, places to get married etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Contact your embassy, they will be able to give you the details.

At any rate, you will have to contact your embassy eventually if you want your marriage to be recognized officially by your government.

As I am an American, and my wife is Thai, I can give you our account of getting married in Seoul if it will help.

I think we went to my embassy first, told them of our intentions, and filled out/filed the necessary paperwork. We both basically had to prove we were both free to marry. Since neither of us had been married before, we did not have to produce much paperwork. I think my wife had to have something from her province stating she was single.

We then went to the Korean county "Gu" office and signed papers stating we were a couple. That was the marriage, no ceremony asked for or needed. We took the papers back to the American embassy to show them. They issued a marriage statement in 2 copies. We then took that to the Thai embassy for them to register the union.

The American embassy AND the Korean Gu office was a combined 2-3 hours in one day. The Thai embassy needed almost a week to confer with the home office to ensure my wife had been free to marry me. After they confirmed that, they issued their own marriage declaration. Done.

I am sure it will be different in some aspects for you, but I thought I would try and help.

I am an American, and my new wife is not Korean. We got married in Seoul 2 weeks ago today, and I received her spousal visa and AR card in the mail yesterday. Getting married took 1 hour and 15 minutes. Applying for her visa/AR card at immigration took 1 hour.

PM if you need details. Good luck!
