I know coex has that music/movie store type thing, similar to hmv in canada and fye in the states.

but outside of seoul, where should i go? i saw some dude on the street selling bootlegs before, but he's not always there. I saw a tiny tiny section of movies at homeplus and emart, but the selection there is garbage. there was even a tinier section in the nc outlet store. So where should i head to? (not seoul)

I'm lookin for mostly u.s movies, maybe even korean stuff.

There are 3-4 guys selling pirated DVDs in the vicinity of Gangnam station on any given night. You also see them at Insadong, Yongsan, inside Samgakji station (I think), and so on. They sell mostly new movies, the ones that just came out back home, for 3,000 each or 10,000 for four.

The guy at Sinchon always had super high-quality DVDs. He probably works with the Itaewon and Technomart guys, because it's usually a similar selection.

Serious Response Alert!!!!

If you want something like an HMV, look for a KYOBO Books. Somewhere in there will be a Hot Traxx. This is your chain commercial CD and DVD retailer in Korea.

Or you could go outside a military base and ask someone. They'll tell you where the "real" dvd store is.

uhh my FRIEND was on the way home from a dinner with HIS boss, and THEY drove past ONEs.. HE said "STOP HERE!!" and literally ran in and said "BATMAN!!" "here." "Good copy?" "Yes, VERY good." and handed over 5000W and jumped back into the nice warm SUV with a copy of Dark Knight about a week after it came out.

if you must purchase them, go to sinyongsan station (line 4). head straight out of exit 5 and continue straight through the tunnel underpass. as you leave the tunnel there should be a seemingly endless collection of vendors' stands on the sidewalk with their backs facing the street. toward the end of the line of stands you'll find a number of dvd vendors.

if the yongsan area is still up and running, which i expect it is, there is NO better place in seoul to find dvds. hollywood releases w/ korean subs, korean releases w/ english subs, catalogues of countless popular titles from over the past 3-5 years, even longer for big korean movies.

the prices are generally as good as it gets too. just make sure to have them play the dvd for you so you can verify the picture and sound quality. unless you're principled about not buying pirated, there's no reason to shell out more than 2,500 for a dvd. i know it isn't seoul, but perhaps it'll help. happy hunting.
