After several long talks with some of my well-adjusted American gyopo friends, we've come to the conclusion that there are a few main reasons they get a bad rap here.

LA is probably the most image-driven/obsessed city in the world. People there are the highest self-monitors you can possibly imagine. A lot of the LA gyopos are first generation, stuck between old Korea and new America.

They're stuck between two worlds, which can create huge identity and insecurity issues in a town where image is paramount. They're not quite American, and not quite Korean.

Once they get here, they can't fit in with the locals because they're "not Korean enough" which must really, really piss them off. However, in some ways the locals look up to them because they've live d in "the promised land" which is basically anywhere they don't hve to study from 7AM - Midnight to get a cubicle job at Samsung where they're treated like slaves.

This may add to an already brewing inferiority complexes which is in turn reinforced by hanging out with large groups of other LA gyopos who try to look down on both other (especially non-Korean) foreigners and local Koreans.

They've been picked on and cast out most of their lives, but suddenly feel empowered. This goes especially for the "thug life" LA gyopos who have always wanted to be hip-hop, but were afraid to back home because they would have been laughed off the block.

Now that they're here, they feel like they can finally let 'em hang because they roll in groups of 10 and can start shit with anyone. Why? Because they know Koreans won't mess with them because they're still foriengers, and foreigners won't mess with them because we know the police and the crowd will side with them because they're still "more Korean" than we are.

This of course, is a broad generalization and doesn't apply to all LA gyopos, just the ones you see at Circle, NB, and Harlem every weekend. Wink Just kidding. You all know the type, and probably know a dozen others that don't even come close to fitting this description.

Just like the bad eggs in ESL, unfortunately they're the ones who get all the attention.

It's bad enough when white chicks talk that way, but it's more painful when I hear it from an Asian; I don't know why.

Eek. Confused Er...have you sat down and had a good think about why the same thing sounds worse when coming from people of different skin colors?

hmmmm, lets see.....

LA sucks. People from LA suck. Therefore, kyopos from LA would also suck.

Ok,ok, it's just a generalization, don't take it personally - I'm sure there are lots of great people from LA - I've just never met any of them. I do really like Snoop Dog though!

I think it's because I've always associated that sort of talk with white girls. (Valley-girl talk is not just limited to California. A lot of women in the Midwest talk that way, too.) When I hear Kyopos like that, it's still unbearable to me because I'm not used to it.

I grew up in an area with mostly white, black, and Mexican people. The few Asians I knew didn't use that valley-girl talk. It's about as new to me as the first time white guys would talk in ghetto slang. "Yo-yo g-dog! I be chillin' in my crib, 'know what I'm sayin'?" And I'll be honest, I guarantee that if I hear an East-Indian speaking in Hispanic slang or a Hispanic girl speaking in valley girl slang (insert your own combination), I will be equally surprised and turned off.

I'm not sure why LA gyopos are the way they are, but I couldn't care less.

I just have one rule about them: STAY THE F--K AWAY FROM ME.

im an la gyopo. everything you say about us is true. -I- have got no ktown friends, or even any korean friends at that. all my friends are more americanized, but i notice that all of us talk in that way you say is annoying.

maybe its not that you don't like la gyopos but more in fact that they never liked you.

hahaha that one made me laugh out loud.

anyway, are these "thug-life" kyopos in the esl/efl teaching community? it's hardly thug-like to teach english to a bunch of kids.

Well, depends on what you teach them.
