Taking backpacks on flights as luggage - Sizing limits?

I am thinking about getting a relatively large backpack, and use it on flights as checked luggage. But I'm a little worried about meeting the size requirements. I wonder how picky the airlines are? Has anyone had problems, or had their backpack measured or rejected?

I see the size of backpacks listed, but this probably does not include the outer pockets, particularly when full. Many airlines have a max size of 62 inches total, h + w + l. I wonder how conservative I have to be to avoid problems.

Here are pages with some information about size limits for various airlines, in case anyone is interested.

If I were just going from point A to point B, standard luggage is fine. But if you are going to be doing much non-airline travel, a backpack sure would be easier.

Anyone with experience in this who can provide some pointers?

Thanks!

Are you talking about checking the bag or using it as carry-on? If you're talking about checked baggage, I don't think you have anything to worry about - Friends and I have checked huge, full duffel bags and as long as it's not overweight, I don't think the size really matters to the airlines. Obviously other people might have different stories, but in my experience, the size and shape of the luggage isn't much of a consideration as long as it's within the weight limit.

oldtactics, I'm talking checked. That's cool, very cool.

I can see them being touchy about carry-on size. Nice to hear they're not picky about checked size.

Thanks for the info.

Budget airlines are picky about checked luggage. If your overweight, they will check you in, but you have to be careful. I've had a case where my checked luggage was overweight by about 7kg, and due to that, I had to wait an extra 24 hours for my case to arrive on another plane. If a plane is overweight, they start by removing the over-limit items.

even when my bag has been a few kg overweight they've never charged or hassled me about it
