 Posted: Tue Jan 20, 2009 10:00 am Post subject: Aspiring to Work in SK when I graduate, what now? |

So I'm currently a junior in college, Georgia Southern University, and I had an English professor tell me about the job opportunities in South Korea to teach english as a second language.
I am very interested in seeking advice about what I should be doing right now to make me the most competitive for a job in SK? I'm currently a Political Science major/minor in Communication Studies.
What should I be doing right now to get the ball rolling and begin the process?

1. Be caucasian. (Not a requirement, but it helps)
2. Have a Bachelor's degree. Junior college won't cut it.
3. Have no criminal record.
Set your sights higher: babysitting kids in Korea while earning 1400 USD per month is not very glamorous.
Edit: Ah, sorry... Junior IN college, not junior college. |

Well there aren't really any opportunities in America right now, so this is about as high as I can set my sights right now.... I love the idea of getting 6 weeks paid vacation, I won't get that anywhere else right out of college. And isn't the salary higher than 1400 a month? You get medical and a housing allowance too. |

Six weeks paid vacation?
Most public schools offer 21 vacation days (calendar)
Most hakwons offer 10 vacation days (workdays)
Sure it's possible to get more. But that depends a lot on your relationship with the Principal and VP. And some may want you there for the whole time (excepting the time you get off in the contract) even when there's no class.
But thanks, you made me smile for the first time today.
And the housing allowance is only paid when you find your own place. Can you speak Korean and settle a contract with the landlords? If not you will have to settle for provided housing by the school which means no allowance. And the typical salary for a newbie is around 1400-1500 U.S dollars right now...you might get lucky, then again maybe not. |

Housing isn't free. Yes you may receive 1500 US in cash but factor in the house and its unlikely that the OP could get anything better in the States. |

It was higher a year or so ago, but the won has plummeted. It used to be around 1,000 won equals $1, now 1,000 won equals about $.73. So if you start at say, 2.0Mwon, you'll be making $1,466. |
