This is the best British gangster genre film I have seen for a long time - it is called 'The Rise of the Footsoldier' and it is about the true story of Carlton Leach - football hooligan turned gangster and his relationship with lunatic Essex drug dealers Tony Tucker, Pat Tate and Craig Rolfe.

Rise of the foot soldiers is based on a true story.

There was a movie based on the same story called Essex Boys

Same sort of thing.

Didn't see that one yet, but I'd like to recommend two:

Layer Cake
Daniel Craig isn't bad, with a supporting all-star cast from LoTR & Star Trek

and Sexy Beast
Focus your ears on Ben Kingsley- he is pure gold

Rise of the Foot Soldier is a friggin hard ass movie. Some very brutal scenes and it is a great bit of gritty film making unlike Guy Ritchie's super cool gangster flicks. I love films like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but you really do need punch to face once in a while and this film delivers.

Sexy Beast and Layer Cake are great.

A better British movie than both of these however, but a bit more substantial is Boy A.

If you want a British gangster film then The Long Good Friday is one of the best examples.

Try it, you'll never watch a Guy Ritchie film again...
