Hi,
Im currently facing a dilema with regards to health insurance. My school would like me to get travellers health insurance but I have been advised against this. I can't find much information on the differences between this and the national insurance? Although as a British citizen my recruiter told me I can't claim any of the pension back at the end? Also does anybody know the differences in price?
Any info would be a great help!
Thanks Hannah x[/b]

By law, you MUST be enrolled in national. If you wish to supplement it with something else, that's up to you, but you CANNOT substitute it. This has been the law since January 2006.
As for pension, yes, you get it, but just not as a lump sum. All pension you collect in Korea will get transferred to your British pension system when you leave. |

Like he said. Furthermore, some insurance companies may not ante up if the host country has a mandatory insurance program. For instance, if you get in a serious accident and the bill is like $30,000, they might not cover the whole cost if they found out that you were working and not enrolled in the mandatory government program. |

Are you on an E-2 visa? If so, your employer is required to enroll you in the government's NHIC plan.
The fact that they're talking about anything else should set off alarms in your mind about whether they're planning to pay you on time, pay taxes in the correct amount or contribute to the National Pension scheme.
Good-luck. |

you can`t be classed as an independent contractor on an E2 so I believe you have to have pension/NHIC.
Whist you can`t claim your pension back now (until you`re 60) who knows, the respective Governments might come to an agreement soon (ok ok, highly unlikely anytime soon!) to get it back early.
Might be worth having a read of Donghae`s post on here

While Immigration agrees, the tax and pension offices disagree with you. The are plenty of people registered as independent contractors without their knowledge. Just ask the good people at CDI, for one. |
