|
|
I'm just wondering when does the new year holiday start? (I assume it is the 24th - 27th Jan) for most Koreans?
Will swimming pools, E-Mart, Ski resorts be in full shut down mode for all or part of this period?
Is Itaewon 'open as usual' during this period?
Thanks for any help on this! |

I never thought of this. Are they red letter days, days off school?
If they are not, presumably eveything will be open?!!! |

I think I read somewhere that the only day when significant things might be closed was the actual New Years Day which I think was the 26th ...
But given the nature of Red Letter Days here and what things have been closed on other holidays ... It is not (in a place like Seoul at least) like it can be for me in Australia where most things will close on Significant National Holidays like Christmas Day (and Seollal like Chuseok is one of the main Traditional Holidays) ... I know on other holidays I have expected more to be closed than actually was ... I will be planning on major supermarkets being closed on New Years Day but also knowing that my small local supermarket will be open ... Places like movie theatres, swimming pools, amusement parks etc advertise at being open 365 days so are not going to be closed ... If you want something specific then just ask them (or look around for signs .... ) |

I was thinking of going a trip to see the DMZ also. I didn't see anything about it being closed. I know the USO give a tour and there is also one at the Incheon Airport. Does any one have a suggestion which one I should go with? Also where do I sign up? |

Everland is open ... and if you print off the discount coupon is giving a discount to foreigners over the new year period. |

Please be very careful when planning a DMZ trip on a national holiday. As you probably know, North Korea celebrates the New Year a lunar week after South Korea. Thus, on the 26th, it is a holiday for South Korea but NOT for North Korea.
Most, if it not all, South Korean troops will be sent home from the DMZ to visit their families which leaves the border unprotected. In 2006 the North launched a minor assualt and managed to capture parts of Daegu and ItaeMyeong. |

The DMZ is never actually OPEN ... And most of the tours to the area don't normally run on National Holidays .... There are some things adjacent to the DMZ (which is actually where the tours spend most of their time - rather than actually in the DMZ itself) ... and some of those places you can go to yourself .... At this close point to the weekend you are very unlikely to get a place on a tour ... even if one was running .. You usually need to plan for that in advance ... they do book out |

it's now Thursday afternoon and traffic has been horrific -!!
a LOT of businesses are closed on the strip just outside of Itaewon - I'm thinking most if not all are going to stay closed until Tues or so. |
