Is it impolite to eat in front of people if you're not in a designated "eating zone" restaurant, street vendor, etc...? I was in a rush and got some street mondu to go and was eating it on the subway...the guy next to me was giving me dirty looks and the people across the way were staring at me too...what's the deal with that?

well, if you stink up the car with your food, people will notice...same sh*t happens in nyc. also, one of the reasons why the subway cars are so clean is because people don't eat in them. koreans have the luxury of cloth/padded subway seats. nyc still treats their commuters like babies with plastic easy to wash ones.

yeah .. a definite faux pas. even walking down the street and eating isn't looked upon favorably ... hence the ajoshis slurping back ramyon in the 711 at the counter.

Just be polite and don't eat on the subways....Buses in the States have the same rules....

Sure, here it is more cultural, but the rules should be followed. Don't just say "srew em" because we don't like their rules.

Well, you can eat on the busses and trains here. From that perspective it doesn't really make sense NOT to eat on the subway.

The subway cleaning crew probably had to clean up one too many squid and kimchee sampler plates dumped on the benches. I drink coffee and what not on the subway and I bet that a bag of chips wouldn't freak too many people out, use some common sense and I think it's fine.

They sell those little cream filled dog shit looking things on the platforms and I see people eating them all the time on the train. I've even seen old timers drinking beer and soju while sitting on that senior citizen bench.

Maybe they were giving you the evil eye because you're a foreigner. Sometimes no matter what I do I get the evil eyes, although someone standing not more than 10 feet from me is doing something similar, or worse.

Are you really so starving that you can't wait until you arrive somewhere where it's more appropriate to eat?

Sitting next to someone who is snacking away is bloody annoying.

it is classed as rude in korea to eat away from designated eating areas (on the street too i believe). during the winter intensive program i have been eating fruit on my way to work to save some time. even this gets me some dirty looks, but mainly from the older generation. but then again, i get dirty looks and stares from this generation no matter what i am doing so who knows!!! i've got a cold too. now munching on an apple and then blowing my nose, this gets many a dirty look. i mean, i've got a cold though and blocked sinuses. so what am i going to do? snort it back and swallow so the snot goes onto my chest so i get a cough to add to my woes? i don't think so!!!

If Koreans can chaw on dried squid in the middle of a movie, whilst laughing and yacking on cell phones and thereby blowing squiddy breath all over the place to stink up the entire theater, you can damn well eat whatever you want on the subway, I say. Twisted Evil
