A considerable number of residents in small cities and counties have drunk polluted water due to the operational problems of their water purifying systems.....

Fear has been growing in recent years as many water resources have been rapidly contaminated by polluted water released by factories and households. And a substantial number of the people in large cities are consuming bottled water whose quality is also unreliable.

Drawbacks to boiling water
The water will still have particulate substances in it, so you should use a clean handkerchief to filter it before drinking. Boiling water does not eliminate pollutants, poor taste or foul odors.
Combining methods can make water safe to drink and taste better.
METHOD 1--WATER PURIFICATION
METHOD 2--WATER FILTRATION
METHOD 3--SOLAR STILL

Students will learn how ordinary tincture of iodine can be used to reduce the population of microorganisms in a polluted water sample, observe how boiling water does not necessarily sterilize polluted water, perform standard laboratory techniques to detect and observe the presence of coliform bacteria in water and discover that water contains anaerobic bacteria that produce various types of gasses. Developed by Edward Alcamo. Grades 9-12.

Merely boiling water does not make it safe for drinking. You may not realise it but boiling cannot get rid of suspended impurities present in the water. To eliminate health hazards and ensure clear, pure and safe drinking water, you need a B----- Water Filter.

I think that the boil/filter method would be the best.

I need to get a filter.

Actually some filters that I see in buildings (I don't study them so I'm unsure what percentage) say they don't do anything for biological contamination, and actually only do taste.

You need a serious filter. When I was treeplanting the camp had a filter that could take water out of a forest cesspool and make it safe for drinking. No one wants Beaver Fever.

I just fill a big bottle up at my hagwon every 2-3 days. My boss told me to so I do it. It's free. It tastes good.

At my location, near the headwaters of the North Han river, the locals swear that the water is 'pure'. I've been drinking it for five years now, and while there are no noticeable effects, I have trouble getting through the metal detector at the airport.

Which bottled water is bad?

I have often wondered.

Some of that "mineral water" stuff tastes funny.

Where do they get bottled water. Out of the crystal fountain on top of Seorak Mountain?

They probably just run it out of a spring under the dry cleaning district.

I have no idea myself, and am being a little sarcastic. I wonder about things.

High Levels of Carcinogen Found in Daegu Tap Water
Donga.com (January 21, 2009)
http://english.donga.com/srv/service.php3?biid=2009012148818
Quote:
The Daegu city government is on high alert after high levels of a cancer-causing material were found yesterday at one of the city's water purification facilities....

Daegu Metropolitan Waterworks said 1,4-dioxane levels at the Maegok water purification plant rose to 54 micrograms per liter, exceeding the 50 micrograms recommended by the World Health Organization.

The concentration of the carcinogen has continued to rise since Monday last week, with the level soaring to 77.1 micrograms at one point yesterday morning.

Given 1,4-dioxane is not removed through purification, Daegu has asked residents to boil tap water. When boiled for more than 10 minutes, 90 percent of the toxic material is removed....

You see, this is why the Korean media and libel laws suck.

We hear over and over that some bottled water may be unhealthy, but they aren't allowed to tell us which one. I have NEVER seen a company name published -- just this enticing threat that could be a load of crap for all we know.

Most bottle water purchased anywhere is simply tap water that has passed through a filter.

Fear of Dioxin: Take Bolder Action to Prevent River Contamination
Korea Times (January 23, 2009)
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/opinon/2009/01/202_38410.html
Quote:
Residents in the southeastern city of Daegu have continually worried about tap water being polluted with toxic industrial chemicals. The latest detection of dioxin in the Nakdong River is raising the specter of an environmental disaster. There is no doubt that the contamination was caused by loose control of the toxic substance leaked by textile firms nearby.

The state and provincial authorities come under severe criticism for neglecting their job of preventing the influx of industrial chemicals into the river, a source of drinking water for about 10 million residents in North and South Gyeongsang Provinces....

Nine firms in the Gumi industrial complex currently release the chemical, a byproduct from the polyester-making process, into the river....

The government only plans to introduce a legal framework to effectively control the substance starting in 2012....

The Nakdong River was contaminated with phenol in 1991, benzene toluene in 1994, dioxin in 2004 and phenol again in 2007....

Coke sold bottled water in England. It was the normal tap water(free, clean in England) with an extra ingredient added that turned out to be carcinogenic.

Don't forget all the water you get in foods. You think that ajumma filters the water for her o-dong or kimchi jigae? Or that it's the alcohol in Hite that gives you the hangover?

I'm just going to collect water through the air conditioning from now on.
