Free Soju Campaign Gets Slap on Wrist

The government plans to ban liquor makers' promotion to give free extra bottles of soju, Korea's traditional spirit, to customers when buy their first bottles before 7 p.m. The Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs is negative about the campaign as it could drive people to drink alcohol excessively.

Jinro, the nation's largest soju maker, is holding such a promotion this month, with 500 restaurants selling its product in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. The campaign is due to end Feb. 13.

The event was meant to induce people to order the product over others when drinking during dinner, the company explained. ``It is a win-win campaign for customers and restaurant-bar owners. People can get free drinks amid today's tight-budgeted dinnertimes, while restaurants can receive more customers,'' a spokesman for the company said.

Koreans drank 34.8 billion bottles of soju in 2008, meaning 72.5 bottles were consumed per person last year.

Its ``J, Lucky 7'' campaign, however, met a backlash when some citizens criticized it for urging people to drink before dusk, asking the government to put some regulations on the promotion, which could harm peoples' health.

The health ministry said there are no strict rules for such campaigns unless they are printed in newspapers or aired as TV commercials. Such acts as giving out free gifts are regulated as they could go against the national health promotion act.

An official said the campaign could be referred to as giving out free gifts but could also be a primer for its newest product. The government is set to consult law experts on the case.

This is not the first time alcohol makers' campaigns have been regulated. Last year, the ministry banned another promotion. Jinro and rival Doosan were giving out cash according to lottery numbers written randomly on bottle caps. The ministry said it was almost gambling meant to encourage the consumption of alcohol.

Wow! I actually like Soju quite a bit. It's like a watered down Vodka. It's kind of subtle and sneaks up on you and will hit you like a ton of bricks.

That being said, I think Soju makes people crazy. I think Soju is the reason why ajosshis are the way they are. Soju also has a lot to do with the fact that the country is divided in half with both sides ready to blow each other up. It makes people hostile. Just a theory based on a lot of observations.

That math isn't right if it's 34.8 billion...but even if it's 3.48 billion bottles, the number's got to be higher if you only take adults who can legally drink into account. One of you nerds can find that out.

Do we need to run tests to see how much soju one person can drink at a time? Any volunteers? Laughing

It's either the holiday or this campaign that is responsible for more drunken ajoshis roaming, vomitting and passing out in the streets.

Did they really have to encourage additional drinking during dinner. Many Koreans really go for it when soju is broken out. This could turn out poorly but hey, it will help keep people warm.

Yes, the numbers are off. If it is really 34.8 billion, then each Korean would be drinking 725 bottles a year. Since that is wrong, we can assume it's a typo and it should be 3.48 billion which does give the correct 72.5 bottles number that's cited.

Now if you account for the fact that approximately 20% of Korea's population is under 18 years old, then you are really looking at more like 91.6 bottles of soju per Korean.

I still wouldn't doubt each Korean drinks 725 bottles of soju per day. I'm sure each Korean drinks at least 2 bottles a day. That sounds about right.
