I just been offered a job and been sent the contract with SMOE. The contract is both in Korean and English. My brother is telling me I need to get it translated again because the Korean part might state something different than the English part.

Is this really necessary? I feel like the document is fine in English and I would agree to it but my family is driving me crazy with all this paranoia.

In your experience in working for SOME, is the English translation of the document accurate or should I get it get the document translated again? It is very expensive to get translated.

Thanks.

well SMOE are one of the few organizations around that wont mess with you in terms of contract/salary/being paid on time/conditions etc.....wouldn`t worry too much with it being a Government program/public school

True. If it's in the contract. It's the gray area, the areas where your principal makes decisions or areas where it's not 100% clear, that you have to watch out for.

There is usually a clause on the SMOE contract that states something to the effect that since the translations are exact neither will hold more sway in court...

That's a bit surprising to me, since the GEPIK contract basically states that the Korean translation is the one that will be followed, and the English translation is only there so that we have an idea as to what the hell the Korean contract is talking about

I'm sorry, you're right... I just pulled out my contract to double check and it does say that the governing language (for SMOE) is Korean on the contract...

I still wouldn't worry about the translation though... I've heard more cases of SMOE sticking dead-on to the contract than I've heard of them breaking it....

You should be ok. Getting a translation will not help you. What will help you is getting a nice school, with a head teacher who can speak English and a vice principal who is not the devil's spawn. You have no control over this so I guess it's time to start praying or whatever you deem fit.

Thanks for your responses. I feel much better now. I signed the contract for SMOE and I sent it via UPS today. I have applied through Footprints. Now I have to wait. Footsprints said that SMOE has more applications than actual positions. Footprints also said the it basically boils down to whomever documents gets in first to SMOE will get the positions. So hopefully, one of those people will be me. If so, then may be I will see you guys in Feb. in the flesh.

Yes, I will pray that I get into a nice school with nice people. If anyone out there has any tips for me about Korea, I would welcome them.

Thanks!

Hey Moniquitas!

I signed with SMOE back in December. Hopefully, I'll see you at the training! I think the SMOE contract is standard. The only concern I have is about the SMOE addenda. Did you get that too?

Hi Miss Tofu!

I got the addenda too. What part concerns you? Now that i think about it my contract does not actually state that the English translation is exactly what it states in Korean. My contract just states that the English translation is merely made for my convenience.

Miss Tofu did you apply through Footprints too? Do know how to speak any Korean?

Hello all. Yeah I recently received my SMOE contract with the addenda as well, seems like pretty basic stuff to me. My concern is this, and yes I have tried the search function as well as looking at the stickies, that I need a notarized copy of my diploma as they do not want the original. Let me give some background info first, this will be my second year teaching in Korea, I finish up my current contract next week. I used my original diploma to get my first E2 visa. When I had my interview at SMOE he made a photocopy of my original and I told him that it is all I had and he seemed to think there was no problem with me giving them the original if I was offered the position. I got the job now my recruiter is telling me that I HAVE to get a notarized copy of said diploma. Anyone else had this problem? I have no issue with giving my original to SMOE, I just want to get this all done ASAP. Is there some way to get it copied and notarized here in Korea? I am assuming by copy they mean an official one from the University notarized etc...

I wouldn't worry about positions with SMOE... Lot's of hiring going on, lot's of people not resigning... If they've offered you a contract, you've got the job... They just want your documentation sooner than later so they can tell you to hurry up and wait for them to process it Razz lol...

My documents went in on time, but my visa was delayed for more than two weeks... When it came down to it I arrived the very last day of orientation and had time to sleep and then go to my school the next morning... They've hired you, they've invested money into you, they're not about to tell you "too bad so sad" lol...

Moniquitas,

I applied through Korvia and I don't speak any Korean. I'm actually Chinese-American.

The portion of the addenda that frightens me a little is the very last part of the addenda that says you can't sue SMOE for any reason including death. I spoke to my friend who's in law school and she said the "if death" clauses usually don't hold any weight, but I found that it was an interesting part of the contract. Honestly, I don't know why that clause is there.
