I just got this message from a fellow foreign teacher here. Can anyone confirm this?

Expacked Alert - Nonghyup Bank Customers

Yesterday at 11:31pm Good Evening,

This is just a quick message for anyone who has a Nonghyup Bank account. Although I can't confirm if this is correct or not, it is important enough to warn you anyway.

Nonghyup Bank may be shutting down at 12am Saturday (as in Friday night/Saturday morning) and reopening at 4am on Wednesday. This is to make some changes to their systems.

As far as we know, if you bank with them it is likely that you won't be able to withdraw money over this period. You also may not be able to use the card for making purchases either.

I would suggest that you visit your bank to check this out ASAP and, if needed, withdraw what money you are going to need for the Holiday.

The shutdown is quite a few days, so plan accordingly.

Please remember, this is for Nonghyup Bank customers only. With any luck hopefully this does not turn out to be a problem.
***********************************************************
Hope this helps a few people to NOT get stranded somewhere without cash! Enjoy your 설날 - weekend!!

That's fucking great.

I leave for Europe on Monday. Am I meant to withdraw millions of won and carry it home with me from the bar the tonight?

Surely this can't be right....

If it is, it tops the list of most idiotic things to happen to me ever.

Yes, I think the ATMs too. Just to be safe I'm taking out all of the money I need for Japan until Wednesday. There's another post here about it as well. Ugh.

Wait! Can I withdraw tomorrow morning? Is it Saturday/Sunday at midnight or Friday/Saturday? Please save me from going out in the -16 windstorm for a 30 minute trek to the ATM.

Fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go now, don't take that risk. If you need money for the long weekend holiday, you should get it before the weekend anyways. Those cask machines won't be stocked the whole time through the holidays!!

Yes, you have until tomorrow (Sat @ midnight) I know it's cold outside, so stay indoor.

I just made a withdrawal at lunch time today(Saturday). It was from a non-Nyong Hyup ATM. If that helps anyone.

The very notion that a bank would intentionally make your money unavailable for any length of time back in "Kansas", would be simply unthinkable. It would probably cause a bank run. Oh well, I guess we aren't in Kansas anymore.

Bank branches don't close for national holidays in Kansas?

Sweet, dude! I gotta get me a job there.

Their branches may close, but the ATMs still work.

This is totally believable for Korea. The same thing happened with Shin Han bank two or three years ago during Chuseok (or Lunar New Year - pretty sure it was Chuseok). Couldn't withdraw money for 5 days. I was staying at a motel in Itaewon and had to get my boss to transfer money to the motel manager's account.
