Gang,

OK, so this might be more appropriate in the BST forum, but I have a question or two -

My wife has finally given me permission to create a multimedia-assisted language learning lab in the house (she teaches groups here), but I am on a semi-tight budget for the time being.

I know laptops are more expensive than desktops, but space is an issue (I ain't giving up my office for the little buggers) so I'll need to go space-friendly: laptops.

So, unless I go mini-notebooks (not satisfactory I would think) I need to buy USED machines.

Does anyone have experience buying used machines with the boys in Yongsan? Any vendors you could point me in the direction of? Wait, do they even sell used machines there...I've never paid much attention.

Well, any info is much appreciated.

!shoosh,

Ryst

The mall at Youngsan station has some used shops up on the computer floors.

You can also get lots of used machines at the bottom floor of the Sun-in building near the tunnel entrance in Yongsang.

Why not buy several Dell Mini 9's? They're just for kids, right?

Bass and the good gent who PMed me with info: thank you for the feedback. Much appreciated.

As for a Dell Mini9...yes, that is what I had originally intended. The oldest students we deal with right now (scaled back all our middle and high schoolers - we have a newborn and just made our program more consolidated) are 1st~6th graders. I figured their little hands would be fine for a Mini...but a friend of mine complained about hers. I have NO experience with minis, but she felt that since I intend to use them for MALL programs there would be a problem with screen size and scrolling.

Dunno. I figured I'd see what the problem would actually be...not sure.

Well, I guess I should explain one more thing. These comps have to be laptops as we just don't have room to set up desktops (even if slim towers). Also, we only have groups of 5 in one big-arse table...so any desktop will eat up any space that need be there.

I know laptops and rugrats don't mix, but they won't use them everyday (nor shall they ever use them outside of our "reach"). We need to ability to bring them in and move them out of the room easily. Only laptops offer this.

Thanks again!

!shoosh,

Ryst

If you end up choosing the Dell Minis and you have someone in the U.S. that can order and ship for you, then you'll find that Minis go for as low as $200 (refurbed) in Dell's outlet store:

This deal comes back every so often.

You might also try used.auction.co.kr , as there are often several used laptops on there.

Maybe this link will work:

These look interesting:

Do yourself a favor.

Buy 5 cheap mini towers and some extension cables (VGA/PS2) to run them to the monitors and keyboards. Tuck them out of sight and be happy all around.

Used laptops (even P3/P4s) will cost more than a new mini-tower and LCD (300-400k) with extension cables for video and keyboard.

seon-in plaza is your best bet.

I think he wants to easily move them around and put them away.

Dell recently had the Mini 9s on sale for as low as $194. Are you still in the market for them?

Unfortunately, Korea really bites as far as Minis are concerned. The Mini-9 still has the same old crappy 8gb configuration at pretty much the same price. The Mini-12 still has slow, stodgy Vista and a max of 1gb Ram (half of Vista's true minimum).

Dell could have done so much more. For the OP's purposes, it probably wouldn't matter, though.
