I just got this message from a fellow foreign teacher here. Can anyone confirm this?
Expacked Alert - Nonghyup Bank Customers
Yesterday at 11:31pm Good Evening,
This is just a quick message for anyone who has a Nonghyup Bank account. Although I can't confirm if this is correct or not, it is important enough to warn you anyway.
Nonghyup Bank may be shutting down at 12am Saturday (as in Friday night/Saturday morning) and reopening at 4am on Wednesday. This is to make some changes to their systems.
As far as we know, if you bank with them it is likely that you won't be able to withdraw money over this period. You also may not be able to use the card for making purchases either.
I would suggest that you visit your bank to check this out ASAP and, if needed, withdraw what money you are going to need for the Holiday.
The shutdown is quite a few days, so plan accordingly.
Please remember, this is for Nonghyup Bank customers only. With any luck hopefully this does not turn out to be a problem.
***********************************************************
Hope this helps a few people to NOT get stranded somewhere without cash! Enjoy your 설날 - weekend!! |
A lot of ATMs are inside anyway, and when you are in there at, say, 11:30 for Woori, the pleasant lady reminds you twice to get out, then the nuclear facility-type horn blare chases you out, or you get locked in. So you can't use them at certain times anyway. I've been in Korea since Nov 2009, all around this region and up and down Seoul and have only seen one outside ATM, on the sidewalk just standing by itself. No bank affiliation but like a 1500 Won fee.
Anyway, I can't believe that even the bank card would be shut down when you go to the store. That, at least. IS proof that we're not in Kansas anymore! |

I guess most Koreans take enough money out for Solnal anyway, and this is the time where there will be least disruption.
I just read this, and had a small panic attack, but them remembered that I had 200,000 taped inside a hidey hole, and took that out. It should see me through, and if not, I can use my Visa card anyway.

I just happened to think that it also means carrying around large amounts of cash for several days. Wouldn't it be common knowledge that that happens, and thus, a reason for a boost in the crime rate? Anyway, be careful out there?
Also, can anyone say whether some other or all banks have the same policy? |

Too bad I read this post today After having to go through the ordeal of trying to use my cards at several different branches, I ended up having to borrow some money for the weekend from a friend. The thing is: I was at my bank on Friday afternoon and no one gave me a verbal warning at all (they complete all my other transactions in English). The whole situation seems pretty outrageous to me. |

Yeah I'm not seeing any cash for a few days. I tried the convenience store machines and they won't work with Nonghyup either. The cashier came over to assist and saw it was a Nonghup card and told me the system is being updated and asked if I had a different card. Of course not, since my money is there.
At least I can still use it for purchases but I wish they would have done this during a time when the banks would be open so at least you could walk in and get cash. |

I didn't hear about this, so I am unable to withdraw any money. I had $100 CAD in my Canadian bank account which I withdrew, but if I didn't have that money I would have been screwed. My credit cards are in good shape too though, so it's not the end of the world.
Suffice it to say that I am angry enough at Nonghyup that I will be permanently closing my account with them on Wednesday. What they are doing is unacceptable and unprofessional. They will be losing a client, and when I do the write up for the NET that comes after me, I will tell them to avoid NH bank at all costs.
What makes this worse is that my internet also crapped out, and I assume I can't get it fixed until Wednesday too! Oh cruel world! Why?! |

Wasn't that back in 2004? I remember that happening as well. I went to the branch after that and told them I'm changing banks. Their reaction was "So?" |

| What a relief to have found this thread about Nonghyup. I went to a few non-NH atms today, and it showed my balance as 0! I have quite a few million won in there, so I was in shock. |

| What kind of changes takes 3-4 days? You think they could do it in increments and avoid service disruption. AHh Sparkling Korea |

| Does anyone know why this is the case with Nonghyup? Is it because it's not an international bank or is it? I couldn't make purchases on my check card not only this weekend but a week ago on Tuesday after midnight at Kim's Club stating their "system was being updated". Good thing I had cash at the moment. I've considered closing this account too! |

Well, it wasn't that long ago. No earlier than 2005. I wasn't here in 2004. |
