British musician murdered in Thailand
Youth from gay bar sought by police

CHIANG MAI: -- A British music teacher was found murdered with his throat cut with a 15cm (6in) knife, in his home in the northern Thailand capital of Chiang Mai today .

David Lyall Crisp, 56, from Derby, had also been beaten around the head and his killer tried to smother him with a cloth, according to police who are looking for a young man with whom Crisp is understood to have left a gay bar the night before.

Crisp was well known among the expatriate community. He also worked as a writer and music director. Prinjai Saedin, 73, his housekeeper, said: "I don't think he would ever harm anyone."

Two young men who were living at his house have since disappeared. There was speculation that they feared they would be blamed.

The killer is believed to have driven away in Crisp's Citroen and could have taken a safe from the property because there were drag marks found outside the front door.

Police Colonel Pattipol Serichainchana said the killer could have been a member of the Shan hill tribe which straddles the Thai-Burma border because the overhead light in Crisp's home had been smashed. This, it was claimed, was a tribal custom.

Serichainchana said: "Shan believe if they destroy the light the spirits will not see them and they will be harder to catch."

that is the 8th murder of a foreign teacher in The Land of Smiles I've heard about (not including all the tourist deaths and supposed/suspicious police claims of suicide by those who went over high balconies/out windows)

it's a much more dangerous place than Korea

One reason that Thailand is more dangerous is that there is more drug trafficking, and opium/poppies is the main cash crop of some hill tribes in the Golden Triangle region around Chaing Mai.

Of course, in the south they also have many young radical Muslims, and the Thai government has claimed that they are getting outside funding from Al Qaeda.

However, there seems to be a steady influx of young Muslims into South Korea as well, and the government here recently revealed that 74 terrorist suspects - some linked to Al Qaeda - have been imprisoned or deported since 2003.
www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/09/116_31365.html

Combined with the fact that North Korea is now viewed by U.S. intelligence as a "near-term" terrorist threat, we're not all that safe here - in the collective sense (but at least we all get to die together ... Shocked )

It's about time they expanded fingerprinting of all foreign entrants here (especially those who fit a terrorist - or drug-dealing gangster - profile...)

hill tribes and Muslims are SCAPEGOATS here

when it comes to the killing of english teachers in that country most are lkely victim of Thais, don't fool yourself about it, and the reason is $$$$. Pattaya and Bangkok have had several incidents and this most recent one in Chiang Mai smells similar, despite the broken light insinuation trying to deflect blame from any of the locals

as long as the locals make one-tenth the income what the foreigners who come there have made, the foreigner as meal ticket will attract prostitutes, drug pushers and thieves willing to use violence

Foreigners in Korea don't make significantly more than the locals (just read Real Reality posts) and so we don't look like a money machine to them, in fact, it's quite the opposite: the foreign teachers see locals as $$$ with privates

anyways,... Thailand IS dangerous, and that includes the Thai people themselves, not just other cultures thereabouts

Pattaya - and parts of Bangkok - are way more sleazy and dangerous than Chiang Mai, I think.

Having lived in Chiang Mai myself for two months while taking my TEFL course, I was impressed by how friendly and nice practically all the locals were (and there were fewer beggers on the streets - although I did notice a few who were both dirt poor and drugged out ...)

I liked the general level of artistic craftsmanship evident at the night bazaar, weekend flea markets, and beautiful festivals - plus there were around twenty vegetarian restaurants within walking-reach of where I was staying (next to one of the many exquisitely ornate Buddhist temples.)

If I'm not mistaken, "Dave" (who owns this website) attended Chiang Mai University, and former forum member, "desultude", also ranked Chiang Mai as one of her favorite cities.

You may be still be right that it was a local Thai, but I know from my own experience that some expats (like one of my instructors who tried to borrow money from all his students) were also involved in buying - and reselling - drugs from nearby hill tribesmen.

It's not that dangerous... it is a morally bankrupt, money hungry, corrupt and feudalistic society however.

Have to agree, not relevant here. Drug-dealing is throughout Thailand. The Muslim situation in the south has never, to my knowledge, been tied to English teachers, or tourists outside of the southern area. The reference to 'terrorist' suspects in SK, also irrelevant.

Like any country, Thailand may be dangerous depending on your lifestyle. I lived there for a few months and found it to be no more threatening and certainly less threatening than several places in Canada. Obviously, tourism is their main industry. On the one hand, it serves to lower the potential for shiite to happen because of its importance to the country. On the other hand, when things do happen, we won't necessarily get the full story or correct story because of the potential deleterious effect it can have on tourism. Having said that, it's NO MEXICO. Now that's a place I'm not looking to go Surprised

Most homosexuals are not pedophiles - and most pedophiles are heterosexual.

All I see evidence for in the article is that he was gay - and the "young man" suspect doesn't indicate that he was underage.

Hopefully, you don't really mean to say that you think all homosexuals deserve to be murdered (and possibly robbed).

It is true, though, that many pedophiles try to get teaching jobs working with kids - but if management is vigilant they shouldn't be able to get away with anything at work. And Immigration shouldn't let anyone teach who has any history of child abuse.
