Unless there is another city of god that was not set in Brazil then I have no idea what you are talking about. Both are set in third world slums. That is the only similarity.

JMO

maybe I came across wrong I am saying the nominees are politically correct shiite.

Gran Torino is a great film about the changing demographic of the West. It's not nominated because Clint is a heterosexual white male who is NOT a Holocaust victim. 4 strikes against him. Maybe Dirty Harry should have won something . What won that year? No doubt a film about a fruit.

Yes No Country deserved to win but that was the exception that proves the rule Oscars go to rubbish.

Another one was with the legend himself Patrick Swayze. Actually it was a very good movie about a yound American Dr who goes up against the Indian mob. He had become disturbed by the practice of medicine in the states and learned to share his gifts on India.

Not much similarity to Slumdog.

Someone said tonight that Slumdog was like City of God. How? There is about 20 mins in it where his brother slightly resembles Lil Zee, but after that, ther eis no resemblance.

Half an hour into Slumdog I thought I was watching the best film Id ever seen, but once the narative novelty had worn off, it wasnt as good as I was hoping.

It was still amazing though, and I was near tears by the end.

the nominees are

The reader
Milk
Nixon/frost
the curious case of benjamin button
slumdong millionaire

Im guessing...

the Curious case of benjamin button

2nd guess... Slumdog millionaire...

Yes...my choices are not nominated. The nominations are allways screwed, have been for as long as I can remember. I agree with Tomwaits regarding the selection of movies.

The reader ...watched it last night...suprised how borring it was.
Nixon/frost...interesting in a political sense, and it got me to watch the orignal interviews.
the curious case of benjamin button...I can't why it's so "great." Burn After Reading" was Brad Pitt oscar performance. That movie was aswsome, but probably will get nothing.
slumdong millionaire...the only one that deseves nomination.

Changeling is great too.

Wall-E, hands down best movie this year, followed by Dark Knight. These dinosaurs that vote haven't a clue. The medium or genre shouldn't affect crediting the final product, but I guess it does.

They both depict young kids growing up parent-less in third world countries. Both depict poverty. Both have scenes of extreme child endangerment. They both have many similar themes and motifs. Even a similar story arc, although City of God's is much more intricate and follows more characters. The story also cuts around in time in both movies. I don't see how you can't see they are very similar movies. I'm not really saying that is bad thing, there is nothing new under the sun, right?

The main similarity for me was the fast cut action scenes, where people are running around. They have very similar cinematography in general. Lot's of scenes of harsh sunlight, that then cut to much grimier dark interior shots. But the fast chase and action scenes in Slumdog definitely reminded me of City.

In general Slumdog is a very sweet film, certainly recommendable, but maybe over rated in my opinion. I can certainly say I enjoyed it but I feel some better movies were overlooked. If it were me I would drop Benjamin Button out of the list and put in either "In Bruges" or "Let the Right one in". Both are better than Button and at least as good as Slumdog.

I'm pretty sure the protagonist in City of God is not parent-less.

This is also present in Boyle's previous work, especially 28 days later which was released the same year as City of God. That could not be a rip off.

The other similarities are present in countless movies. I was mainly querying the 'rip-off' tag. I don't see City of God as a main influence on this movie. There are probably a crap load of bollywood movies that have influenced this..none of which I have seen.

Maybe I should watch it again..sometime one viewing isn't enough.

In Bruges was very slick, I would loved to have seen that get a nomination.Let the right one in was probably my favorite movie..very creepy.

Slumdog was cool, don't see it as being put there because it's different or trendy....plot is pretty traditional, rags to riches, boy meets girl, boy loses girl and so on.

The Indian setting just makes it stand out more.

I liked "The Wrestler." Watched "Slumdog Millionaire" last night. Not too bad. "The Reader" wasn't bad. Not great.

Have yet to watch the other nominees and I'm not too enthusiastic about downloading them.

Of the nominees, I've only seen two - "...Button" and "Slumdog..."

The first one I saw a while back and thought it was interesting and at least pretty good, and the latter I've just finished watching and thought was very good - and written, crafted, and acted well enough to merit multiple Oscars.

It's my pick so far, but I haven't seen the rest.

I did see The Wrestler, and thought that Mickey Rourke played his character so well that it seemed more like a documentary of a real person, and - from what I know of the pro wrestling scene - the situations and psychology were very authentic.

Of course, it may not have been that much of a stretch since Rourke has been a pro boxer. Reportedly, he took method acting to the extreme of actually cutting himself with a large blade for the obligatory show of blood in a hardcore match.
