Meanwhile, the British stocked the lifeboats, and, of course, built and captained the ship...

Gopher:

I assume you're saying that we can draw unflattering conclusions about the Brits from the fact that they couldn't build and steer a ship properly? If so, I don't know if that's the same thing as someone actually knowing that the ship is going down, and making a deliberate effort to get himself on the lifeboat before other people. The designers and navigators were incompetent; the me-first crowd on the lifeboats were immoral.

All that said, I don't know how much we can conclude from results like this. We don't know, for example, if the orderly Brits were thinking "I'd better wait in line patiently, so that the weaker passengers can get on first", or if they were thinking "I'd better wait in line patiently, because that's what the captain said to do".

I've also read studies showing that American donate more blood than Canadians do(this is excluding paid donations). Don't know how much I would generalize from that either.

Survival of the fittest. Now I know why there's no British Empire anymore.

On the Other Hand: I have engaged in nationalistic-essentialist arguments with others here before, mostly for the fun of causing some Canadians and Western Europeans pain and suffering -- never because I actually believe in them.

This represents the first time I recall your initiating something along these lines. Do you truly believe that "British" people behave more morally correct than "Americans" in a crisis...?

By "British" of course you mean Northern Irish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom

I'm sure the Brits did behave better on the Titanic...congratulations to your forefathers. BTW, kudos on that whole Battle of Agincourt--you guys rock. Rolling Eyes

In answer to your question, I'll re-post what I wrote in my second entry on the thread...

You could probably classify me as agnotic leaning toward skeptical about any hard conclusions someone may draw from this data.

That movie would have been much better if Jack just pushed Rose into the water. I'm sure her excess body fat would have allowed both of them to survive.

They should have just plugged the hole with her. I'll always hate that movie just for all the fiddle dee fiddle dum irish people on board.

They would have had on all the appropriate clothing to climb the iceberg, that is for sure.

The communal cries of 춥다 would be enough for me to give up my life boat seat.

The ship was full of wood, and kegs that would float if emptied. There was plenty of time to throw together rafts of various types that could have supported hundreds of people until help arrived. And there were plenty of skilled working class individuals locked below decks who could have and would have quickly and ingeneously designed and built such craft.

The captain was an idiot, whatever his nationality.
