In fact, the lack of even simple logic in many of the postings here only prove the Koreans right---they are getting the dregs of Western educational systems.
My advice: let us cheerfully accept our deserved lowly status and enjoy those things that Korea offers us, especially a booz-friendly culture, excellent food, and al the p*ssy a man could want. |

Yeah, Mr. Dokdo, shut up or put up.

Not great, I ain't saying that but not bad, and *I'm willing to post it.*. You say everyone sucks. Post your excellent pedigree if you're willing to tear other people down.
Other than that, maybe it's time to take a quiet break.
On edit: Mr. Dokdo is an asshat who has been know as M-su and he's really just an obnoxious, worthless human being who's negativity is sad, pathetic, and well, to me at least, inexplicable. I don't get trolls, I don't get people that tear other people down, and I never will. It's sad. |

A bit classist, maybe? Is every member from every income bracket well represented in the classrooms at Harvard? I'm just curious, it really has nothing to do with my main point. |
These are stats just for Harvard from 2006-07.
http://education.yahoo.com/college/facts/6573.html
Tuition, room & board, fees: $43,655
Of all of the freshman who enrolled in 2005, 3,655 people applied for financial aid. 3,288 of them were awarded financial aid and all of them had their need fully met. The average financial aid package was $30,780.
They have such a large endowment that they can offer financial aid to everyone who is in need of it. You do not have to be rich to go to Harvard. |
How many people were enrolled that year? How about their Master's programs? I am pretty skeptical about the material they teach, but you're making it sound like I could be lined up for a free MA!! |
It doesn't matter how many people enrolled that year but it was 6,649 people. All that matters is that 3,288 of the 3,655 people who applied for financial aid received it and an average package of $30,780 at that. The average Harvard grad who got a financial aid package had student loans of $8,769 after graduation.
If you were deemed to be a need-based student, you could have a lot of or all of your MA paid for. The catch is, would you be accepted? |
It does matter, because it would be interesting to compare overall enrollment, students enrolled seeking financial aid, and see if all income brackets are represented. Unless someone has already done the leg work and surveyed the representation of various income brackets in Harvard students. That seems like a survey that would prove Harvard isn't classist. Just as a list of books taught in some courses would prove Harvard is chalk full of excellent critical theorists. Easy as pie, really....
Let's just pretend I graduated the top of my program with honors in my little no name university and, with additional work experience, I have a good shot at getting into Harvard. What is a needs based student? I sure as hell can't afford Harvard University on my current salary unless I want to be mired in debt for years to come (in addition to undergraduate student loans). Which means, unless I would be considered a needs based student, I could not be a Harvard student; I just don't have that kind of money. Look, either I qualify for financial assistance or Harvard is a classist drone factory shooting out guardians of the failing capitalist state. I strongly advise you to prove me wrong somehow- you don't want to be a drone, do you? |

You're willing to post it because you're a rube. Do *not* compromise your anonymity here, or that of anyone else. You can disagree, argue, flame, get flamed, and call someone's mother a degenerate *beep* whose *beep* smells like *beep* on a warm summer day, but you never compromise anonymity. You might wanna go back and delete your post, and ask the other poster who quoted it to delete his too. |

Straph, I've read your posts. I consider you a jerk. I'm posting as someone who's fully proud of who I am and what I do. I have no reason to be anonymous.
You wanna call me a rube do it to my face punk. Seowon Univ. Cheong-ju. My students succeed.
You people who think you can treat people like garbage because the internet is anonymous are cowards. You have my utter, complete contempt.
And for those interested, a PM throwdown is being instigated!

If you can't afford tuition, you will receive financial aid. Easy as that. Harvard and other schools of its caliber with large endowments are looking for the best students whether they can afford it or not. If you can't afford it, they will give you financial aid.
If your family has an annual income of less than $60,000, you pay no tuition at all. From $60-$180,000, you pay 10% of your annual income assuming you don't have any other significant assets. So, even if your family has an annual income of $160,000, you will only have to pay $16,000.
They also give you financial aid in the form of a grant... not a loan.
I strongly advise you to prove me wrong somehow- you don't want to be a drone, do you?

Ah, the internet tough guy not only compromises his anonymity, but also challenges someone else on the internet to a physical fight. Man, you got a lot to learn... As for me, I'll do you a good turn: When you sober up in the morning and realize that you basically just told everyone here who you are and where they can find you, you won't have to beg a mod to come back and edit my post to remove the name of your institution.
And you just threatened me via PM.
No, I don't want to engage you in fisticuffs. Lay off the soju.

Straph, no one cares where I live. They have their own lives.
Also, they're not jerks. Honestly though, you insult people on the net. There really should be some kind of accountability. If you call me a rube, back it up man. I said where I live and you're hiding.
You're disgusting and pathetic. I didn't insult you. I don't even know you.
Is that wrong? Asking for insults to be backed up by the person who shouts them?
Cheong-ju. Seowon University. I teach there. Bring it. |

If I called you a rube in a bar, would you seriously want to "take it outside" and "settle it like gentlemen" or whatever? You're telling me that you are seriously in the habit of doing this in real life? |

Dude.
I get it. You're pathetic. I feel sorry for you. You want to be able to insult folks anonymously on the internet. Good for you.
Have fun with that. I consider you a coward. |

Hehe yeah... It's such a Catch-22 question, isn't it? If you say yes, you're a drunken hothead. If you say no, you're an internet tough-guy. I guess your answer is no. |

I'll help to settle it.
I am currently a Harvard grad student, and I don't come from money. I worked my way through my classes waitressing and bartending. I actually was a part-time student at one point because I could not afford it and didn't want to get financial aid, although I would have gotten it. But they would not pay for my whole degree. I think my classes would have been reduced.
If I wanted financial aid, I could have gotten it. I also have a friend that recently graduated, and he came from money. He applied for financial aid but did not take it in the end because his parents paid in full, in cash, for his PhD. With that being said, on his own, without association from his family, he would have received financial aid.
One reason why I came to Korea to teach was because I would be making more money here than I would being a lowly TF at Harvard.
p.s. Harvard is possibly one of the most corrupt places on Earth and control Cambridge and most of Boston. |

If you can get into Harvard, you're better off going there because of their financial aid. At another school, you might have to take out a student loan but at Harvard, you'd get the vast majority or all of it as a gift.
I strongly advise you to prove me wrong somehow- you don't want to be a drone, do you? |
Well, sir/ma'am, I aim to prove you wrong. If Harvard is so generous with its money that they are willing to house and feed a poor sod like me, then I shall be applying tout de suite. Sadly, the deadline for the 2009/10 applications have passed. I much would have preferred if you had seen if someone with my income (think 2 year hagwon teacher) was eligible for financial (oops) aid. Oh, oh, challenge- can an ivy league grad find out if your average hagwon teacher qualifies for financial assistance in a Harvard MA program? Not theoretically, for real.
Maybe you are right and I can get big sloppy grants for my graduate studies rather than running out of heating oil in the dead of a Canadian winter like my sucker siblings. And they probably have a great study abroad program there, too! You could be right and Harvard lets in all the smarty pants that come their way, and I wouldn't have to suffer through what I anticipate to be a dry and mundane program. Maybe I could study in Mexico.... Point is, we'd all be winners. Wouldn't that be swell? Shame we'll have to wait a year to hear the good news.

Corruption, hmm? Sounds interesting. Free education, you say? I'm almost in the door. Feeling reticent and dirty, though, and I am not kidding when I say I suspect the education I would receive at Harvard will not teach me useful critical world analysis. You're getting your MA in lit, MollyBloom, but you and I have had at least one discussion that leads me to believe the education you're getting is not full of radical theory. |
