We're all familiar with the usual interview questions like 1) Why teach in Korea?, 2) Why did you leave your last school?, and 3) What are your strengths?, so, I'd like to ask if anyone has had any SURPRISE interview questions when they'd done a face-to-face interview in Korea.
Also, what questions do public schools generally ask?
TIA Wink

This could be a very valuable thread if anyone responds.

I know some people who are about to reinterview so I will try to update this thread later with details (if any surprises do in fact occur).

For one interview I was grilled on sexual harassment--what is it, how do I ensure my relationship with my students is appropriate, etc. What makes this particularly scary is that it was a job for a hagwon! Oddly enough, I didn't take the job.

EPIG team asked me:

Do I like to take walks, ride a bike, get out and be physically active?

Why did you have a mammogram last year, was there something wrong?

What kind of Korean food do you eat, and if not, why not? It is okay if it is for a medical reason, but if you just don't like Korean food, then it is not working into our culture.

they like healthy workers because if you're not healthy you'll get sick=more days off and koreans majority of the koreans are healthy nuts

they don't want unhealthy workers mentioned above

It is okay if it is for a medical reason, but if you just don't like Korean food, then it is not working into our culture. because they provide you with a typical korean lunch if not they want you to be immersed in the korean culture. if you don't like it, what are you to eat? just lie if you don't like it lol

A few years ago , I was in CHAING MAI ,THAILAND. I had discovered that their was a job opening at a local hogwon. I applied for the job and got an interview.
I go ot the interview and before I even sit down , am asked " HOW DO WE KNOW THAT YOU ARENT A PEDIFILE ? HOW DO WE KNOW YOU ARENT GOING TO TRY AND TOUCH THE CHILDREN?"

As you can imagine , I didnt know what to say

I've spoken about this before - I was asked what religon I am - and I was so shocked (it's illegal in the U.S. to ask such a q) I actually said so - and at first refused to respond.

well this wasn't what he expected - so he kept on and we talked about some other subjects as well - but then he went on about Satanists and scientology and wanted to know if I was either of those since I didn't want to say my religon - at this point it's like WTF??? I don't say my religon so I'm either a scientologist or a Satanist???
Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

give me a freakin' break...

finally I told him I'm Catholic but he didn't look exactly relieved - I'm not sure WHAT the right answer would have been to tell the truth.

whatever...

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

the thing is, I was in touch w/the other FTs who had done the screening process and they had recommended me for the position. They also expressed surprise about these qs saying he'd never asked them anything like that.

go figure. something or someone got him off in a weird direction. wasted my time, it did. Evil or Very Mad

In northern Ireland it is compulsory for an employer to find out your religion. It gets sent to head office and stored away to prove that they hire a mix of protestants and catholics.

I hate filling it in, and if it is ever asked in the republic of ireland i never answer it even when i go to hospital

I was interviewed over the phone several times and, I thought the oddest question was if I was obese. Good news is that I'm not, or even close -- but it was kind of weird. I was also prepared for the questions, "Why are you Mrs. Warner (Mr. Warner is deceased sadly for my kids in that we've been divorced for a goodly amount of years), not married?" I do the sad widow routine. Frankly, it's none of the school's business but necessary to play the game.

The people I talked to only said they were asked general questions such as why are you teaching in Korea, tell me about yourself, etc. They also wanted to know if the people were single or married, and their ages.
