Anyone out there bought stocks in Korea? I see Hyundai elevator went up 800%. Why though? Sure beats me!

That's the Hyundai Co that was owned by the Hyundai family member who commited suicide.

I haven't bought any Korean stocks. I'm very leary of it. Corruption seems to be widespread throughout all areas of life here so it gives me an uneasy feeling to invest in a market that is made of companies that may (or may not) be corrupt as well.

I may just be missing out on some great opportunities but that's my choice.

Good luck if you choose to buy stocks here.

Cheers

Yes, be very leary of the Korean stock market. I tinkered with it for a while. I used to spend Saturday mornings at my broker's office back when they were open on Saturdays.

What I witnessed was my broker collecting money from his clients and then calling up his friends at other offices and kicking the price up before a quick sale. It was all insider trading and stock manipulation. The most amazing part was how open it was.

It's supposed to be reformed and cleaned up now, but zebras don't change their stripes.

I heard we can buy stock online now. Has anyone done this? Whom would I contact to help me with this in English. I already know what company I want to buy and I know it is legal to buy the stock. I just don't know who to contact.

I know I need to open an account somewhere, then I am given the tools to trade online.

Anyone know?

Any of the larger brokerages in Korea will help you set up an account, provide you with trading software, etc., but assistance in English is catch as catch can.

All you should need to provide them is your passport/alien registration card, proof of employment, and your bank account details.

I never invest in Korean stocks. NEVER!

Last year was a good year for stocks and it was easy to call out names and make predictions, but this year is a little less certain and people are frightened to say what they think.

I think it's best to invest now in:

BKYI
KRY
NOK
JOE
WOOF
SYPR

Last year my Korean roommate lost about $2000 fooling around with the stock market. To me, money is just too hard to get to gamble it away on stocks.

Long term mutual funds and retirement funds (a ROTH IRA) all in the United States... but if you can invest in a growth fund (i.e. Singapore Growth Fund), I've had success with those...

Most USA based brokerage houses will let you purchase stocks sold on a foreign exchange. Open up a US brokerage account and trade to your heart's content.

Do your due diligence and research the stocks, good luck finding the information in English.

Edit: If you're not American then switch USA with your country of choice.

I've been trading stocks online with samsung securities for 3 years now

Commision fees are .14% of your trades. it's also instant which is nice.

Setting up a stock account isn't entirely easy and you'll need to provide a few forms as well as been living in Korea for 6 months..but you can do everything online.

I usually do my tradingin the morning while I have my coffee.

As for money..if you buy cheap and bankrupt companies...you'll lose money. If you buy strong reputable companies and have some patience..you'll make money.

All you need is time and to understand finances and how to research companies other than reading the newspapers (which is old info).

Alex

My account is with Bidwell and Company, mainly because it is a local Portland company and I like to support my area. They allowed international trades for no additional commissions which was nice and online trades are cheap as well.

www.bidwell.com

Last month they were bought out by Ameritrade so I'll be shopping for a new broker soon. I can keep you posted if you like but it's really simple to find one.

Just do a web search for online brokerage and it should be a snap.

Biggies (total online).

www.ameritrade.com
www.etrade.com
www.scottrade.com

All of these allow for international trading but sometimes you may have to speak to a live broker (which means a higher commission).

Do some research to find the right one for you.

Yep, I'm first going with an IRA. After that gets that going, I'll put, say, 5-7% of my yearly income into the market.

Anybody hit the China Life IPO last month?

Any IPO's of note coming up?

It's best to do your own due diligence and feel comfortable with what you purchase. I almost never give advice on what I'm buying because I'd feel totally guilty if anyone took a loss from my tips.

I would also imagine that taking stock advice from anyone off this board is a bad way to go. It's fun to research a company, invest, and watch your money grow in my opinion. Don't rob yourself of the simple pleasures of market capitalism.

That being said I've been cleaning up this last month on Sprint Wireless (PCS) which has given HUGE gains, but no one makes or loses money until they sell right?

Got to pay for law school somehow.

Well, the big one, Google IPO will come up this year sometime, but it will probably be a little too high priced for my desires.

Your conservative fund stance is well respected. Good luck!
