I don't think this one has hit the papers yet, but yet another drug bust happened last week. A teacher at my friend's hagwon was caught up in some Osan sting. He's on his way to being deported. This teacher's girlfriend, also a teacher at that hagwon, has since disappeared. No word on if she's hiding out or anything, but it's anybody's guess as to why she didn't show up for work.
Not that it matters, but it was an all-Canadian school (no other nationalities are allowed to work there). |

Why would one risk one's occupation and reputation over weed. |

It just seems foolish to be involved in this stuff when the host government is so interested in targeting foreigners in the first place. |

Weed wasn't mentioned. Was it weed or another drug? |

Stop hiring teachers from Nanaimo and Vancouver.

If they are from B.C. then it most likely was weed. We can assume so.
Then again, a lot of youngsters are into meth, e, other such pills. |

I honestly don't know.
He might have said Yongsan and not Osan. I'm not sure. In any case, his hagwon is not located near either of those places (where he was caught). It's located closer to a very large government building which will go unnamed.
He must have been either buying or selling at this other location -- that's my guess. My friend wasn't giving out many details.
What amazes me is that people -- from ANY country -- feel it's OK to buy/sell/use drugs in a foreign country where they are very illegal. |

It isn't that they think its okay because they are in a foreign country...
They think its okay because they don't believe they could be caught |

Why don't the Korean papers mention how many Koreans are caught in the bust?
I remember reading about one pot bust where a teacher and the son of a Korean professor were caught. The foreigner was charged but the son of the professor wasn't. So, Korea seems to be saying that it's alright for Koreans to use drugs. Maybe that's why many Koreans are busted for drug use overseas. |

Doesn't sound familiar. My friend told me the name of the school, but I honestly forgot. I wouldn't mention it if I did know it -- it's not the school's fault, and wouldn't help their business any. There be libel/slander laws in Korea! |

When a foreigner does something wrong, it always makes the news.
I grew up in a small town and the local RCMP would never arrest any of the locals. If some local was caught with drugs, stole something, damaged something, speeding, you name it, they would usually get off with a warning. No charges so no report in the local newspaper. The RCMP didn't want bad blood with the locals.
If someone from out of town did anything wrong at all, they got a ticket. There was no way they were going to talk their way out of it.
I'm not saying that it's right but I think that's the way it usually works in small towns. I've also been to my share of Asian countries to know that it's usually the same there as well.
And to anyone that comes to Korea and does drugs or anything illegal, they probably just don't care. I don't think they're the types that take teaching too seriously. |
