So, I made my decision. Going to head back to Canada, get my qualifications to teach English and Social Studies, and that's that. Just wondering if anyone else has experience teaching in Canada. Any stories? Good, bad, whatever.
Also, I've decided on going to SFU. Anyone did the PDP program there? |

| I am a certified English as a Foreign Language Teacher for Adults (CELTA) and am able to get a quick job in primary schools or foreign schools to teach individuals or businessmen/women. One reason why I am going back. |

That's cool. I've also thought of doing the CELTA one day. Aside from teaching adults, aren't there positions in cities like Vancouver for ESL in public schools? There is a huge immigrant population, and I remember the FOB kids being pulled out of regular class for special English enhancement lessons. But that was back in the 80s when I was in elementary school.
In grade 4, I remember at least 2 or 3 kids in my class (of 30 or so) who didn't speak any English. I also remember picking on one of them...  |

S.F.U is an great school and I have thought about doing my course there. How much does it cost? I guess it is not easy to get in?
I also have residency in Aus so might do it there. I still don't think teaching in Canada or Aus would be very good so I might head to an international school when I am done. |

It's $7,200 for the one year PDP course. As for ease to get in, roughly 1/3rd of applicants get in depending on program, number of applicants and the time of the year.
I looked at the info for Jan. 2009:
High school English: 72 people applied. 8 got accepted. 
Social studies: 81 people applied. 8 got accepted.
Elementary: 154 people applied. 80 got accepted.
September looks more promising:
High school English: 114 people applied. 32 got accepted.
Social studies: 172 people applied. 32 got accepted.
Elementary: 255 people applied. 144 got accepted. |

I've a BEd with English and History Intermediate/Senior teachables.
But 9 years ago I was placed into an ESL classroom by accident... and it's been a huge blessing that has led me to where I am today.
I'm never going back to the public system. Substantially less dough and a heck of a lot mo' problems. Insane marking, planning dozens of new classes each week, having 12 ADHD kids per clas, dealing with parents, extracurricular duties, having to drastically change your lifestyle to be a role model (ixnay on the Facebook, clubbing, etc) ...
Private education all the way for this guy.
Though I'm sure there are some sweet gigs out there. Like this one:

Aww man, I wish you would have told me that a while ago. I could have saved thousands of dollars on courses and hundreds of hours wasted teaching on placement. |

With all due respect, Whistleblower, there's having a CELTA (which I also have), and there's being certified to teach public school (which CELTA does not grant, and which I am not).
Like you, I can teach at whatever level I wish in North America, once its private. But having the CELTA does not, by itself, permit one to teach in public school there. eg. if I wanted to teach public school in North America, I would need to get certified by a state or province (via a Canadian B. Ed or an American ACP, for eg.).

And perhaps the easiest and least expensive way to get that certification is via an American ACP. Search these boards, there are threads that give details. That and good luck: after hearing of the horrors of teaching public schools in North America, I've long had major reservations... |

| I was certified in my state (non-English) prior to coming to Korea. My certification has since expired due to not renewing it. It's one of the dumber things that I have done by letting that happen. I would have to re-apply and jump through the hoops again if I go back home and decide to teach there. |

Nope, I'm using "le mot juste" to quote Proust and few more notables before him.... I'm not speaking about that which is incomplete - all humanity is certifiable - however teachers are THE definite article (that is, if you have actually committed and signed up to this nunnery ship...

Are you teaching private in Canada?
I am soon to be certified in Ontario with the same teachables as you. I agree that the public system is pretty crazy in terms of the amounts of things teachers need to do in order to do a good job. |
