Hey guys.
I'm currently writing up material for a play for my ESL class starting next week. Any input, ideas, links, advice, collaboration, and pretty much anything else would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying for a StarTrek theme. But there isn't to much out there through google.
Thanks,

Wes,

You might find some of the books on drama I've collected good for reference. Click HERE. .

Keep the language simple and repetitive and without a lot of narrative description (mostly dialogue). This will make it most useful. Time permitting, if you can allow students time to write or at least in a "guided writing" sense contribute and personalize the script -- that much the better....

I've often found it handy to show students a video that will act as the template for the skit/play. Then, using that background and context, they have an easier time writing or adapting something as their own play.

Cheers,

DD

Thanks,
Although this is for top level 1st grade middle school students. So, dialog will of course apply. It's an optional course. I teach at a camp setting deal. New students every 2 weeks or so.

Here is something I've done. I'll try to keep this explanation simple.
1. Find a comic with no words or white out the words.
2. Cut the comic into sections.
3. Divide the class into groups.
4. Each group will receive one section of the comic.
5. Take one artist from each group who will not see the picture. The rest of the respective group will describe the picture to the artist and the artist will draw the picture on the board.
6. When all groups have finished the drawings have the class guess the order of the pictures. Then gradually have them give more details.
7. Have the class make a dialogue for the story frame by frame.
8. Each group will now choose an actor/actress, director, and critic.
9. The students will practice and the critics will say what they like and dislike, must like on American Idol.
10. Finally the acting/directing students will improve the performance based on the critics suggestions.
11. Mix it up, the actors will love becoming the critics.
12. Have fun.

I'll also suggest for other teachers the adaptation of "The Little Mole" , a popular book here in Korea. It's available at the above link. On EFL Classroom I have the whole book on audio with pictures. But that book works good as a play because there is a lot of repetition as each animal is asked and replies if they "shyte on his head". The scatalogical humor works wonders to keep everyone entertained also.
