Ahoy!

I have a 5 month break between contracts and was thinking of going to South America to study spanish for a couple of months and then travel around until August.

Has anybody studied Spanish at a university? I was thinking of Colombia or Cuba.

Cheers!

I studied Spanish in San Jose, Costa Rica. I studied at a place called Universal de Idiomas. You can get up to 12 hours of college credit if you need it for general studies. Three hours a day, five days a week for a month cost me around $700. That's just for the course, not accomodation. I enjoyed it.

Guatemala, especially Xela and Antigua, is popular place to study Spanish. Quite affordable, some good language schools, and Guatemala is a fun country to visit. Also easy to swing down and see the rest of Central America.

I agree with Guatemala. I spent three months there in 2007 and loved it. I'll definitely head back to Antigua for more lessons the first chance I get. You can also study at Lago de Atitlan. It's a little cheaper there than the other places, and you can stay with native Mayan families. I did that and liked it, but found it was not at all beneficial to my Spanish learning as Spanish is there second language as well and they speak a Mayan dialect in the home.
