The Korean Who Crowned Queen of Soul's Obama Moment

Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, created a sensation within a sensation when she performed at U.S. President Barack Obamas inauguration wearing a distinctive gray hat with a big ribbon studded with costume jewelry. The riddle of the hat was soon solved,

AP on Monday reported it was designed by Korean-American Luke Song (36). His family has run the Mr Song Millinery in Detroit for 25 years, and Franklin has been a customer for about 20 of them.

She dropped by the shop and showed Song the coat she planned to wear for the inauguration, asking him for help with the hat. Song's solution set her back a cool US$500 for the special bespoke version. The standard satin ribbon version is available for $179.

Song says he has been getting floods of calls from men who wanted to buy the hat for their wife, mother, or grandmother after watching Franklin's performance.

To be fair, it's not like the Korean paper went digging for something obscure -- the hat guy was blogged in the NY Times, too: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/kits-aretha-post/

Oddly, there's this hat designer in NYC who is constantly obsessed over by so-called "hat people," by which I mean "people who actually spend more than $10 on hats;" and she's also Korean, I think. http://www.eugeniakim.com/

It would seem that Koreans have conquered the expensive hat market, in the US at least.

considering how the media ridiculed the hat, I'm surprised anyone would have taken credit for it!!

Shocked

I think this is newsworthy. Completely innocuous, and merits the blurb it got.

Quite honestly I like the hat.
It really suits a classy woman in her 40's.

Really gives me an American 50's feel too. Something that is royalty and has a slight British flavor to it.

If it was a kiwi who designed that hat lots of New Zealand newspapers would also get excited about it.

Though that design is not my cup of tea, hats off to him I say.

Just a drop of Korean blood enough for news media

For most of the South Korean press, nationality seems to be a main concern nowadays. Very few people have sympathy for those who joined the rush in recent weeks to the Immigration Bureau to relinquish their South Korean citizenship....

It seems we are obsessed to find anyone that has achieved greatness in just about any field and when that person happens to be only one-fourth Korean or even less, we are sure to write about that person....

Please Canada does the same damn thing all the time. It drives me nuts. Every time there is some remotely large news story out of the US they media outlets are all clamoring to find "the canadian connection" and report it as fast as they can.

Turns out Mrs Smith who lived on Pike street once had breakfast with a guy who read about that train derailment in new york. We'll have her story next.

If your idea of karma involves a trade off of calling out your stupidity for my death by a blue van, then again, are you f-ing insane?

Crazy f-ing bitch. Laughing
