| It makes more sense for your boss to fire a shorter term FT. He doesn't have to pay severance, he can just pay 30 days and no airfare... Koreans usually know the $$$ down to the last penny (Big won down to the last little won) so this doesn't make sense to me... |

He has 3 FTs, and he needs no more, no less than 2. If he has me stay and flies one of the guys back, then he's just going to have to turn around in April fly someone else out here to replace me. If I go now, he doesn't have to worry about replacing me because he'll have the 2 foreigners he needs on staff.
It makes perfect sense. |

I talked to my boss yesterday and told him that if severance and airfare were guaranteed, I'd let him boot me early.
He agreed to give me a letter of release for my visa (i have no idea how to transfer a visa...) and even offered to talk to some people he knows about finding me another job. Of course, being in the country, I can easily get another job on my own, but he sounds like he's going to be cooperative.
I've asked the head Korean teacher to sit down with both of us on Monday, as my director's English listening skills are a little wacky and we're going to get everything down on paper.
Now, on to finding a job... |

| It sounds like everything is going smoothly for your little plan here. Keep us updated on how it plays out. I am signing up to read the progress. There is a shimmer of light that hagwons are not universally bad places to work. My boss is actually pretty cool. Good luck! |

You might want to get a release letter yourself, just in case he doesn't have one or know how to do one properly. Sounds like a good deal for both parties here if they hold up their end of the deal. If you get anything beyond a prorated severance, that's a bonus. Is your airfare being paid in cash? Obviously, cash is best for flexibility and if you can land another job the day after this contract's end date, you won't need to do a visa run (i think). |

sounds like you've got the only decent boss in Korea and he's going out of business
still, I'd make sure I had the cash before I signed anything |

Maybe he doesn't want to worry about finding a new teacher as soon as April. This way he gets several months to see where all this recession stuff is going before going through all the hassle and expense of hiring someone new and potentially having to fire them immediately if the business continues to crash.
I'd agree not to count your money until it's in the bank though. |

I don't get why this is so hard to understand. He has 3 foreign teachers and due to a drastic downturn in enrollment since November, he only needs 2. I leave in 3 months and the other foreigners don't leave until the fall. So it works out like this:
Get rid of me and pay my way out in March (about 3mil in total benefits, excluding regular salary). All of the other teachers stay until fall, and no new teacher needs to be found because he isn't replacing me. Immediate cost: about 3mil won in severance and airfare.
or
Gret rid of one of the two guys now and pay their airfare out of Korea (about 1mil, and I really do believe he'd pay to send them home. I think he'd even prorate severance but I won't include that). Then, when my contract is up in April, pay my severance and airfare (about 3mil), find a new teacher (1mil for recruiter), and pay to bring them to Korea (about 1mil). Immediate cost: around 6 mil to send guy home, fulfil my contract, and recruit and tranport a new employee.
3 million won is cheaper than 6 million won.
I'd also like to add two things for the skeptics:
One, when I proposed that I find another job and vocalized my desire to stay in Korea for another few months, months that exceeded the amount of time on one of the other foreigners' contracts, he looked shocked and told me that had he known that he would have asked one of the other foreigners to leave. He then offered to do just that. I had to explain to him that I was looking forward to a change of scenery.
Two, I'm certainly not counting my money before I get it. I'm doing everything I can to cover my ass, but I acknowledge that certain things are out of my control and I'm not going to stress about getting fucked. If I get fucked, I get fucked. Yes, I do trust my boss more than the average hagwon worker, but in the past 9 months he has proven himself more trustworthy than the average hagwon director. I may be eating those words here in the next 3 or 4 weeks, and I'll not hesitate to accept the "I told you so's" here on Dave's if that happens.

I agree. I have been and have known many others that have been screwed around by hogwons and public schools. Proceed with extreme caution.
If the hogwon owner says that you agreed to leave early without pay you have no proof that you didn't say that. Cover your rear and start now. |

Um. This is really old but I just stumbled back across it and have this overwhelming compulsion to finish this 4 year old story.
I accepted his offer. He agreed to transfer my visa. In my first year stupidity, I went with him to immigration where he accidentally cancelled my visa instead of releasing me (I still to this day believe it was an accident...he was kind of a tool). I got a job in Seoul, moved, and got my full severance by payday. Then I started my "6 month" long job in March of 2009...and just ended up quitting that place last month.
Happy endings abound! |
