Anyone get down to Okinawa? Is NAHA interesting in its own sake? How is Okinawa in winter? Is it better for summer or winter? Where are the better more popular beaches to visit?

Okinawa is nice. Naha's main drag, Kokusai Dori is full of vibrant life. Too many chinsuko (Okinawa cookie) shops and blown glass shops, though. The weather in the winter is nice and many baseball teams hold spring training and even their winter camps down there. They have arguably the nicest aquarium in the world, Churaumi (sp) that contains whale sharks. The beaches and diving are fantastic but I can't remember the names as I'm not much of a beach bum. Lot's of history relating to WWII. Bad points might be, too many military and limited big city activities. Like Korea, they love SPAM. Don't forget to pick up some taco rice.

I saw most of the GIs are up in Okinawa City, right? Or are there quite a few in NAHA as well?

Limited big city activities might be a problem. If I make the effort to go there, then it means NOT going somewhere else with beaches and perhaps better things to do. It seems like the prices to get to Okinawa, and I could just as well be anywhere else in SE Asia. However, I am quite curious to go and check it out!

Naha's main drag, Kokusai Dori does look vibrant from youtube clips, and the beaches do seem real nice. If those two are as good as they seem to be, then I believe I want to make the trip. Thanks for some feedback.

Will probably get around to going this summer as my local airport does some good deals there, I've been told it is by far the cheapest place in Japan.

Really? I`ve heard it can be one of many expensive places in Japan because it`s an island.

And in the rest of Japan, you are not on an island? Rolling Eyes Sorry, I could not resist.
