Legal Documents to Be Used Internationally

By Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter

Legal documents written here will be effective overseas without requiring certification from respective embassies, the Ministry of Justice said Sunday.

Previously, if a person wanted to use Korean documents outside the country, he or she had to receive endorsement from Korean Embassies abroad or respective countries' embassies here. The process took a long time and was hugely inconvenient, the ministry said.

Under the ``Apostille'' (legalization of document for international use) signed at the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, papers having gained legalization from local foreign affairs ministries have the same legal status in membership countries.

Korea joined the convention in 2007 with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade doing the job, but the justice ministry recently took over to oversee distribution and legalization.

Its office is on the ground floor of the foreign affairs building in Doryeom-dong, downtown Seoul.

Do we need to legalize any "Korean" document?
